Movie Review: 'A Wrinkle in Time'
A Wrinkle in Time is a genuine delight. Wonderful characters, genuine laughs, and gorgeous visuals make for one of the best family adventures in a very long time. Director Ava DuVernay has taken the beloved bestselling book by Madeleine L’Engle and crafted a genuine blockbuster that retains the inspiring heart of its beloved source material. DuVernay has also discovered a brand new movie star in young Storm Reid.

TV Review: 'Atlanta' Robbin Season Episode 2
Paper Boi experiences Robbin Season up close and personal while Earn comes into some money in Season 2 Episode 2 of the FX hit series Atlanta. Fresh off of his house arrest, Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry) is eager to find some good weed. Unfortunately, his new found fame means that even his long time dealer assumes he has a lot of money and thus we get the theme of this season of Atlanta, Robbin’ Season as Paper Boi is robbed at gunpoint and doesn’t even come away with something to smoke for his trouble.

Ranking the Movies of 2018: Week 8
Nearly 50 movies in 2018 for me. That’s actually less than usual for me in a two month period but let’s not dig too deeply into my sad, lonely life in front of a screen of some sort. This is, after all, a modern project intended to catalog a year in my life as a movie critic. It’s also about how singularly silly it is to rank and compare movies. Each film is subjective and to say that one movie is better than another movie is rather ridiculous in most cases.

Movie Review: 'Death Wish'
I went into Eli Roth’s remake of Charles Bronson’s Death Wish expecting to come out angry and ready for a fight. I was expecting to be offended and spend some time writing about the poor timing of a film release that deifies the gun industry just days after the deaths of high school students in Parkland, Florida. I do have some of that righteous indignation built up in my mind but the reality of Death Wish is so boring I can barely stir up the outrage to pan it.

Movie Review: 'Red Sparrow'
Red Sparrow is a lurid, trashy, and violent spy thriller in which Jennifer Lawrence stars as a ballet dancer turned sexy spy. If you are going to enjoy Red Sparrow, you need to make sure you are in the proper mindset. If you go in expecting a classy spy thriller, you may find yourself disappointed; Red Sparrow is a frightful and tawdry spy thriller brimming with violence, torture, and sex.

TV Review: 'Atlanta' Robbin Season Episode 1
Earn is homeless and Darious and Paper Boi aren’t speaking for unspecified reasons as we join the story of Atlanta Season 2: Robbin Season. Donald Glover’s remarkable FX series returns for season 2 with the same sense of style and humor that made season one so very memorable. Can Robbin Season match the heights of season one all year long? Well, season 2, episode 1, “Alligator Man” indicates that indeed it can.

Ranking the Movies of 2018: Week 7
Busy week for ranking the movies, as I have added nine movies to this list in just a single week. Two of these movies cracked the top five and the strange and wonderful new indie movie, Are We Not Cats, broke into the top five movies released in 2018. It was a weird and wonderful week with a pair of revelations, a new movie that blew my mind and the other, the best classic we’ve had this year on the Everyone is a Critic Podcast.

TV Review: Hulu's 'The Looming Tower'
The Looming Tower is a terrific bit of potboiler television. That it also happens to hue very closely to the historic record prior to and immediately after September 11th makes it all the more compelling. Based on Lawrence Wright’s incredible 2006 bestseller, Hulu’s The Looming Tower is a remarkable achievement that is occasionally slowed by TV conventions but is nevertheless endlessly compelling.

Movie Review: 'Are We Not Cats'
Are We Not Cats is the kind of strange, small-budget, slice of life movie that hits me in a particular sweet spot. The film focuses on a bizarre fetish/addiction that is weird and rather dangerous and has a pair of unique and fascinating names. Are We Not Cats also has one of the best oddly intriguing titles outside of a Guy Maddin movie. That the title is a strange, twisted, comment on the movie rather than a direct expression from the movie only makes me like it more.

Movie Review: 'Actors of Sound: A Foley Art Documentary'
As much as I consider myself a student of film, history and craft, I must admit that there are aspects of the craft that I have taken for granted. One of the more glaring omissions from my film education is a study of sound design. Now, don’t misunderstand, I am aware of good sound design. I know it when I hear it. But, I must admit, I haven’t done much studying on the actual art behind sound design.

Movie Review: 'Every Day'
Every Day is a clumsy and dimwitted young adult fantasy romance that tries to use modern gender politics to assume relevance. A clever premise aside, Every Day pretty much stops at its clever conceit and assumed relevance without any thought or nuance given to what the ideas being presented really mean. If Every Day were any more competent, it would be truly offensive.

Classic Movie Review: 'Frantic'
For a movie called Frantic, it’s in no hurry to tell its story. Frantic is a 1988 thriller starring Harrison Ford and directed by Roman Polanski. Frantic was released nationwide on February 23rd, 1988, 30 years ago this weekend as I am writing about it and it will be featured on the next Everyone is a Critic Movie Review Podcast available on iTunes, Google Play and your favorite podcatcher on Monday, February 26.
