AI-Generated Music Is Killing Creativity—and How to Tune It Out for Good

AI drivel doesn't belong in our playlists

Younger generations have brought back vinyl records because they sound more realistic than digital tunes. Yet, they're eagerly gorging themselves on AI-generated music. Ironic, right?

AI is infecting every area of our lives. I say "infecting" because it feels like this subtle virus you don't even realize you have until it's too late. Then, there's no cure. At the moment, one of the symptoms is a complete loss of creativity. Yes, AI has come for your playlists and it's disgusting.

I Shouldn't Have to Verify if an Artist is Real

Like millions of other Spotify users, The Velvet Sundown popped into my Release Radar. But, something didn't feel quite right. It felt too perfect with no real emotion.

The music didn't sound bad, but I didn't feel that usual connection when I hear something I like. As usual, I checked out the artist profile. I immediately realized, this band wasn't real. It was all a bunch of fake crap. Everything about the profile, social media posts, and supposed band history were fake.

Needless to say, I blocked them from Spotify so I didn't have to deal with yet another AI artist clogging up my playlists.

Sadly, this isn't the first time this has happened. I shouldn't have to verify whether the music I'm listening to is real or not. That's not my job.

The Death of Creativity and Music in General

Creating AI-generated music is about as creative as handing someone some crayons, letting them color in a children's coloring book, and then hanging it on your wall, claiming you're the next Picasso. It's bullshit and you should be ashamed of yourself.

The same applies to any AI-generated content. I know some people claim the creativity is in the prompts. No. You're wrong. Get over it already.

You're lazy. That's it. There's zero excuse for using AI to generate stories, poems, art, music, etc. If you're not creative enough to do it yourself, learn. Hire someone.

With millions of legal free-use images and music out there, use that to build upon. Don't just ask a computer to do the heavy lifting because you're so lazy you've destroyed your own creativity.

Now, I have a difficult time checking out any new artist. I don't want more fake music. I'd rather just listen to what I know is real and continue supporting real musicians and artists.

As more AI-generated music floods streaming platforms and YouTube, music could become an emotionless pit. Music is supposed to come from the heart and soul, not a computer that has no clue what a heartache is or has never experienced falling in love for the first time.

We Shouldn't Have to Pay for AI Music

What pissed me off even more about finding AI-generated music on my Spotify playlist was that I'm paying for it. If you create AI crap, you don't deserve money. You didn't do anything other than type in some prompts and upload the results.

I definitely shouldn't have to pay for it. After all, the "artist" doesn't exist, so they don't need money. If the "artist" actually existed, they'd have the balls to create real music and not hide behind AI platforms.

I fully feel that Spotify and other music streaming platforms should have to clearly label AI-generated music so we can block it.

Tuning Out AI Drivel

The best way to fight back against the death of music and creativity as we know it is to stop listening to AI-generated music. Take a few minutes and do the following when you find a new artist:

  • Look at their artist profile
  • Check out their socials
  • View any pictures to look for obvious signs of AI
  • See if they have any tour dates (AI bands can't tour)
  • See if band members have any history before the band

Right now, many AI-generated blogs and articles are tanking on search engines. Even AI overviews on search engines aren't putting AI content at the top.

Let's band together and save music by refusing to listen to it. And, make sure you bash it on every platform you have access to. Shame the creators until they crawl back into their holes and leave real creators and musicians alone.

I watch a lot of reaction videos where Millennials respond to the music I grew up with (Generation X). I often wonder if we can shut out the noise of our new age, and if we can get back to something a little quieter. Thank you for this!

I wonder if creators of technological advances ever consider the criminal potentials. I guess it’s just a paycheck to some.

I didn't even stop to think that music would be another avenue for AI-generated content to creep into Krysta! Sad times:/ "You're lazy. That's it. There's zero excuse for using AI to generate stories, poems, art, music, etc. If you're not creative enough to do it yourself, learn." - yup, and yup again.

I am here to congrates on your top story

  • Bold, raw, and unapologetically real. You’ve voiced what many of us have been quietly feeling—music should come from lived emotion, not code. Thanks for standing up for true artistry. 🎸🔥

This is the biggest, worst step in the wrong direction. When I was a teen my father criticized musicians who didn't play "real instruments" which at the time meant electronic drums and keyboards. I mostly rolled my eyes at the thought, yet noticed that about 10 years later those musicians were back to playing real drums and the keytar had disappeared. Now it's so much worse. Already, guitarists were criticizing those who used automatic tuners on their guitar. Now it's singers who sing using autotune or modulation. For decades music has been overproduced to the extent that "bands" and "musicians" can't just pick up instruments and play onstage. Even so-called "unplugged" shows are mixed, produced, and modulated to some degree, which is pathetic. This is end-stage prepackaged music, where there aren't even musicians, the computer just does it all.

Very ironic. It's like they can't think for themselves and make a sound decision. Stick to only what is real. It's sick how the fakeness of The velvet sundown, went as far as fixing up a profile, social media posts and band history. Oh the audacity! I like that you gave us advice at the end, and the last line rhymed, intentional or not. It was a perfect way to end this piece. We should band together and refuse to listen to these AI musicians. Congratulations on your Top Story, Krysta.🎉🎉🎉

  • Back to say congratulations on your Top Story! 🎉💖🎊🎉💖🎊

  • Producing music with AI tools can be very creative and original, if you know what you’re doing. Most people do not understand the complexity of AI tools. Of course you have the right to enjoy the music you want. But don’t take the joy away from those that do enjoy the creativity that AI has to offer music. AI in general has a lot to offer in a positive way. But like anything else there are people that use it to deceive people and that I agree is wrong. Over although I am excited about AI because the possibilities are limitless. I feel in the future AI is going to be a big part of our society progressing, teaching, learning, and creating jobs.

This was such an insightful read! I appreciate how you highlighted both the challenges and the importance of preserving human creativity in music. It really made me think about how we can balance technology with genuine artistic expression.

  • AI is perfect for Spotify, so they don't have to pay for their source, and they pay a pittance anyway. Unfortunately, AI music often sounds good, but I go for what I know is real. (I have created some AI tunes, but also recorded my own version as well, but Voca Creators eulogised and praised the AI-generated tunes

Very good advice here on how to spot. What ever will come next from AI it’s worrying ♦️♦️♦️

  • As a writer, I'm able to very quickly spot AI-Generated content here on Vocal. Unfortunately, I'm not able to do the same with AI-Generated music, images, and videos. But to pay for it, hell nahhhh! AI-Generated anything should never be supported!
