"Get Shorty" Movie Review.
I recently watched "Get Shorty" again on Tubi. The movie is funny with a good plot. The casting is what makes this a really fun movie ti watch.
It is about a gangster. Chili Palmer (John Travolta) who ends up in Los Angeles and wants to be involved in the movies. Where Miami bores him, LA excites him, he is star struck and he loves being in the glitz of Hollywood.
It is when Palmer meets the "Zimm" (Gene Hackman) that the movie gets really good. Zimm is a producer of horror movies and his go to gal is Karen Flores (Rene Russo) as the star in his movies.
Written by Scott Frank and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, "Get Shorty" brings a con man who fakes his own death. Palmer must find this man and all roads lead to LA. When Momo dies, Palmer is now under "Bones", Ray Barboni (Denis Farina). Summoned to Los Angeles, "Bones" makes his name known immediately.Harry Zimm is caught between doing business with either Palmer or Bo Catlett (Delroy Lindo) Harry's main investor who owns a Limo Company. He also deals drugs to fund his wanna-be Hollywood movies as a producer.
Harry also has a another movie, "Mr. Lovejoy" that he wants to make. He has aspirations of casting Martin Weir (Danny DeVito) a big time Hollywood star. Weir likes the movie and wants to star in it.Harry Zimm is caught between doing business with either Palmer or Bo Catlett (Delroy Lindo) Harry's main investor who owns a Limo Company. The higher ups here in Hollywood are pompous, the wanna be support actors try to claw their way to the top. The money people want in without putting money into the projects, at least not their own. The lies, the deception and the promises of big things draw in the amateurs to the movie business.
Chili seems to have an effect on Harry, he leans on him for financial advise. He respects that he was a bookie turned movie producer. He trusts Chili more than Bo. Where he can lead Bo on, he can't with Chili. Harry is the ultimate double crosser, however. He will go with anyone who he thinks has the money to produce his films, even if it means luring Ray "Bones" into the production of his latest film.
The movie well depicts the trendiest, hottest restaurants in Los Angeles. A fun scene at The Ivy where Harry Zimm has to use a straw because Bones has broken his jaw was hilarious. Martin Weir too is that eccentric actor who orders for everybody then promptly leaves even before the food is delivered to the table. His constant lust for Karen, Martin left her for a younger woman but still wants Karen sexually brings the decadence of Hollywood to light.
When the movie "Mr. Lovejoy" is finally in the making, we get the last scene at the airport where the illusive $500,000.00 is being picked up at a safety locker. The scene does not end well and has to be re-shot the next day with Penny Marshall as the director. Chili and Karen are now together. Chili asks Karen if Morton's for dinner is good; he has settled into Hollywood nicely. Karen likes the fact that Chili is an outsider, she has tired of the old Hollywood seen with the same old people.
