Not tonight
Created for the Harmonic Verses Challenge (Create original song lyrics that use musical structure to tell a story)

Since I’m just about the furthest thing from a singer, I knew there was no way I’d be posting a video of myself singing this song.
But I still wanted to give you a feel for the energy I had in mind while writing it. So as you’re reading through the lyrics, try to imagine a blend of Rose Betts - Doodles and Barry Louis Polisar – All I Want Is You. That’s the kind of sound I imagined behind the words.
Verses 1-4:
My friend, so sweet, once came for tea
and said she’d found a date for me.
Her excitement clear and bright as day
she set up dinner right away.
Before we met I told my friend:
"The mystery now has to end."
I want to know a little more
about the man she thought was Thor.
"He wears a suit, he wears a tie,"
my best friend told with sparkled eyes
"He drives the latest sports car and
he only wears expensive brands."
"But is he nice and is he kind?"
I had to ask to calm my mind.
"Will he smile and laugh with me
when life throws curveball, hard to see?"
Chorus:
I want flowers from the field ,
you want gestures grand and bold .
I want raindrops on windshield,
you want necklace made of gold.
I want laughter in the night,
you want diamonds covered life.
I want sunrise bringing light
in the morning to us all.
Verses 5-7:
"Can’t you hear I’m telling you,
with him you’ll never wait in queue.
Dollar here and dollar there
gets you indoors anywhere."
"Will he give me kisses every night
and hugs so warm when says 'sleep tight'?"
Stops the car on our joyride
when sees the poppies at roadside?"
"Will he dance with me in the car headlights
on a crisp and starry August night?
Will he tell me 'I love you so much,
my one'n'only, darling girl, nonsuch'?"
Chorus:
I want flowers from the field ,
you want gestures grand and bold .
I want raindrops on windshield,
you want necklace made of gold.
I want laughter in the night,
you want diamonds covered life.
I want sunrise bringing light
in the morning to us all.
Verse 8:
My friend, bewildered, looked at me
as if I was speaking in chinese.
"I believe he can one-up everything!
Did you know he wears a diamond bling?"
Bridge:
Nightmare for one is a knight for some.
He asks if you want tequila or some rum.
I’m happy with the way things unfold-
waiting for the one who wants to hold
my hands, my heart, my quirky soul.
Until he appears my story’s untold.
Chorus:
I want flowers from the field ,
you want gestures grand and bold .
I want raindrops on windshield,
you want necklace made of gold.
I want laughter in the night,
you want diamonds covered life.
I want sunrise bringing light
in the morning to us all.
Verses 9-10:
I smiled and took my best friend’s hands ,
"That date is yours! I now demand
you go and get the man you want -
enjoy the night and fancy jaunt.”
I will take my book and a cup of tea
together with the setting sun on balcony.
Mine will come when the time is right
and I’m happy with the fact that it’s not tonight.
Chorus 2x:
I want flowers from the field ,
you want gestures grand and bold .
I want raindrops on windshield,
you want necklace made of gold.
I want laughter in the night,
you want diamonds covered life.
I want sunrise bringing light
in the morning to us all.
I want flowers from the field ,
you want gestures grand and bold .
I want raindrops on windshield,
you want necklace made of gold.
I want laughter in the night,
you want diamonds covered life.
I want sunrise bringing light
in the morning to us all.

*Gasp* no singing? Outrageous. Lol, just kidding. That was amazing! It had such pep and beauty to it, and I loved the chorus. You might be a born song-writer, Cristal. ✍️ Gah, it was so good!! Thank you for recommending "Doodles" by Rosa. The tone of your song came through on your words alone, but I had never heard of Doodles until now. It's a really nice song. Catchy, but kind of relaxing in a way and uplifting.
