My Fair Monster is a heartfelt, horror-loving YA romcom that blends pageantry, romance, and the emotional journey of undiagnosed ADHD into a story that’s as fun as it is deeply meaningful.

My Fair Monster by Adrienne Rivera is the kind of book that sneaks up on you — unexpectedly adorable, emotionally grounded, and bursting with horror-movie flair. What seems like a light YA rom-com about a pageant queen quickly evolves into something far richer, weaving family dynamics, self-discovery, neurodivergent representation, and budding romance into a story that is heartfelt from beginning to end. Coming from Page Street YA (thank you again for the ARC!), this novel proved to be one of the most refreshing and genuinely uplifting reads I’ve picked up this year.

A Pageant Queen with a Horror-Movie Heart

Every chapter opens with the title of a classic horror film — an instant delight for fans of the genre and a clever nod to protagonist Corie’s passion. She may wear stilettos and crowns, but her real dream is to become a horror actress in Hollywood. Her pageant winnings aren’t for prestige — she wants to fund her future on the big screen. That contrast alone makes Corie such a fun and original character, blending beauty-queen sparkle with slasher-movie love in the best way.

Undiagnosed ADHD, Family Pressure & Emotional Impact

One of the strongest themes in the novel is Corie’s emotional journey with undiagnosed ADHD. She internalizes her forgetfulness, scattered thoughts, and impulsivity as personal flaws, especially under the weight of her demanding aunt, who constantly belittles her and weaponizes guilt. The scenes where Corie self-blames, especially when her grandmother is hospitalized, are painful but deeply authentic. Rivera writes this arc with respect and honesty — highlighting how easily neurodivergent teens can internalize inadequacy when the people meant to support them do the opposite.

Romance, Horror Movies & Genuine Chemistry

Enter Everett — a special-effects makeup artist with dreams of working in horror. The moment Corie says “Redo me, my fair monster,” the chemistry begins. Their relationship develops through mutual passion for horror films, hilarious banter, shared insecurity, and the safety they give each other. Their romance isn’t just cute — it’s emotionally supportive. They build each other up rather than tear each other down, and watching that love story unfold is an absolute joy.

Found Family, Accountability & Growth

Corie’s support system is one of the most heartwarming pieces of the story. Her mother and cousin Tegan champion her without coddling her — holding her accountable without cruelty. Even her aunt eventually recognizes her mistakes and apologizes, allowing Corie’s emotional healing to feel earned rather than convenient. The message is clear: you are not broken — you just need the right support.

Final Thoughts

My Fair Monster is everything a YA contemporary romance should be — fun, warm, thoughtful, and full of heart. It balances humor and romance with meaningful commentary on neurodivergence, self-worth, and family relationships while celebrating horror fandom in the most delightful way. It’s light without being shallow, emotional without being heavy, and absolutely adorable from start to finish.
