“Ray!” Sheryl yelled. “Jack is missing! He was sitting out on the patio a few hours ago, and now he’s nowhere in sight.”

Ray came running downstairs. “Did you check the garage? How about the side of the house?”

“I’ve looked everywhere, Ray. There’s no sign of him anywhere, and I’m really worried.”

At that moment, the phone rang. The safe house phone was reserved exclusively for the FBI investigation.

Sheryl walked over to the kitchen and picked up the phone. “Code, please.”

“Beethoven’s mother was Maria Magdalena Keverich,” a voice on the other end replied.

“Thank you, Agent Tandy. What’s going on?”

“We’ve just had a major breakthrough in the case. Willy Sampson has come forward. He’s given us all the information we need to blow this case wide open.”

A rush of emotions swept over Sheryl. “Is she alive? Angelita?”

“Yes, she is. I can’t share many details, but I can confirm that both she and Mitchell Gannon are in custody.”

“And Xochitl?” Sheryl asked, her voice trembling.

“That’s still under investigation,” Agent Tandy said carefully. “Unfortunately, it looks like she may not have survived. We’re hearing conflicting accounts, so we can’t say anything definitive yet.”

“Okay,” Sheryl said, her voice soft. “Well, this is good news. Hopefully, soon we can go back home and resume our lives.”

“Oh, and Mrs. Amsbury,” Agent Tandy added, “Agent Cole has reported that your son is currently sitting on the roof of the safe house. You need to bring him inside immediately.”

“Ray! Ray!” Sheryl called out. “Agent Tandy has good news—Willy Sampson has come forward with information about the case. But first, we need to get Jack. He’s on the roof of the house!”

🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛

Sheryl and Ray rushed into the front yard and immediately spotted Jack sitting cross-legged on the roof in a meditative pose. He looked completely at peace.

Ray called out to him, “Jack! What are you doing up there? Come down!”

Jack blinked, snapping out of his trance-like state. “Huh? What? What’s going on?”

“Jack, you’re on the roof! Get down from there right now,” Ray repeated, his tone firm and urgent.

Jack, looking confused, glanced around for a safe way down. Spotting the brick wall on one side, he carefully made his way over and climbed off the roof from there.

The three quickly stepped back into the house, where Emily sat in the living room, flipping through a magazine.

“Jack, Angelita is alive,” Sheryl said, her voice thick with emotion.

Emily’s ears perked up at the news, and she joined the others now gathered in the entryway.

“Really? How... how do you know that?” Jack asked, his voice shaking.

“Willy Sampson came forward,” Sheryl explained.

Jack’s eyes widened. “When can I see her?”

“I don’t know, Jack,” Sheryl admitted. “They still have to investigate what Willy told them.”

“And when can we go home?”

“I imagine once the investigation is complete.”

Jack ran a hand through his hair, his voice trembling as he said, “My little Angel is still alive. I had given up hope. I was so scared... I thought I’d never see her again.”

Tears welled up in his eyes as he pulled Sheryl into a tight embrace. She gently caressed his back in comfort. Emily approached quietly, placing a soothing hand on his shoulder.

The sudden shrill ring of the phone shattered the moment, startling everyone. Sheryl kissed Jack on the forehead before stepping away to answer it.

“Code, please,” she said in her usual brisk tone.

A muffled voice on the other end replied, low and menacing. “It’s all a lie. You better watch your back. I’m keeping an eye on you.”
