Loreen didn’t blink or shy away. Instead she stood straight as if her spine became a railroad spike. She spoke with her protégé about thirty yards away. Lisa folded her arms.

“Now hold on, Lisa,” she admonished. “You have every right to walk away, to abandon this deal but you were all in just moments ago!”

“I don’t know about the state of Texas. That place denies the right for women to take control over their minds and bodies.”

Loreen’s eyes turned to saucers and mouth hung agape. She flailed her arms.

“What are you saying? There’s no perfect state, even Delaware has plastic bag laws. Plastic. Bag. Laws….”

“I know and the money seems great but I just can’t call myself investing with people who associate with such a regressive state.”

Loreen sighed. “Alright, you have to see this as a macro problem. It’s big. Rockets have to take off from Texas for the cheap. It’s the only viable way for us to function.”

Lisa stared. Her honey eyes locked on a socket in the wall. Loreen lifted Lisa’s chin.

“This only works if the three of us engage in this deal. They want your intelligence and ability to relate to the public just as much as us.”

Entrepreneur Paul lended his charm to keep the tension low.

“Everyone loves to talk about the 212 or so Delawares that can fit in Texas. I’d like to think how many people actually pay attention to these figures..seems like we could focus on something more substantial, no?”

A few steps over to a bench led Loreen and Lisa to sit down and hash this all out with even more intent.

“All you have to do is go back there and tell them that—”

“I’m going to tell them all yes, then.”

Loreen is right about Texas. Regressive to women. She will tell them !

  • Loved the tension here — moral values vs ambition, and no easy answers. “Railroad spine” was such a strong image.
