Rushing out of the door and slamming it hard enough to kick out some of the dust which insisted on residing, Maxine spammed the button for the lift and impatiently checked her watch, counting to her definite impending doom. Maxine’s hate grew for the lift which was now sabotaging her life. Today was her first interview, for her first ever job, and she was already going to leave a bad impression. The lift made sure to make her life harder and stopped at every floor before her before it finally arrived at her floor, with the squeak of a hinge. She sprinted in, fixed her hair using the mirror in the lift and prepared herself to run out, towards the taxi which was going to leave in 30 seconds, as if the world was on fire. As the lift’s metallic doors very slowly slid open, Maxine forcefully pushed herself out, leaving her thighs aching because of the scrape.

As Maxine ran out of the building, breathless and her heart stomping, she was greeted by the smoke coming from the leaving taxi. Wearing a defeated expression, Maxine slumped to the floor and rested her back against a nearby wall. She caught her breath as tears rolled down her soft cheek. The sun shone brightly and the wind carried the sweet smell of flowers, but her heart ached as sadness choked her. Her interview was in ten minutes but there was no way she could make it unless she catched the…train. The same train which shot a bullet through her heart. Through her life. Through her love. How could she ever get on that train? How could she ever risk herself into remembering, into reliving her traumatic memories?

She hurriedly checked her watch again, its hands spinning faster than ever before, and realised that the train was her only option.

After five minutes of continued running, Maxine found herself at the station. Her heart broke once more as the sound of running school children and the screeching of trains halting to a stop plunged into her ear, taking her back to the last time she was standing on this platform at the station.

Platform 4, the platform which ruined her life.
