Review of Miraculous: The Adventures of Ladybug and Cat noir

the decline of a series

By Marcela marinPublished 3 months ago 2 min read

This is a 2015 series with seven seasons that has a very interesting plot. In short, two teenagers are chosen to be superheroes in Paris. The thing is, the girl likes the boy when he's not a superhero, and the boy likes the girl when he is. Honestly, it's a good and very entertaining story.

Throughout the series, there's a villain who casts a spell on civilians to wreak havoc on the city. I like this series; I find it fun and with a great idea behind it. But I also feel it's a living example of the decline of a series over time.

The first season is, without a doubt, the best of the seven. Overall, they're all good until the sixth. However, when a plot twist occurs, instead of improving it, it damages it, as it loses some of its essence.

They also touch quite a bit on the LGBTQ+ community. I understand that it's a normal and current topic, but I think it's oversaturated in the later seasons. There are couples that the audience already knew were couples, but it wasn't necessary to demonstrate this so explicitly. Also, in the middle of the series, they repeat the secondary villains too much, which takes away from the story's excitement. They also explain things too much, and that makes it lose the mystery it had at the beginning.

Another important change was the animation. In the last seasons (the seventh), they used a new, more digital style. It reminds me of what happened with Monster High: a series that marked an entire generation, but when it was renewed, it lost part of its essence. I understand that these changes are intended to attract new audiences, but they end up alienating fans who have loved it all their lives.

Something similar happens with Miraculous: the previous seasons were perfect, both in plot and animation, but the most recent ones feel too digital, lacking the same magic.

In conclusion, Miraculous is a very good series, and I recommend it. But they shouldn't have milked it for so long. It's the perfect example of how a series that was almost perfect can lose its charm by trying to drag on too long.
