DNA Test Said She Wasn't the Mother… But She Gave Birth to Them

A pregnant woman applied for government assistance in Washington state... and what happened next was shocking.

One of the strangest and most complicated medical stories in history is the story of Lydia Fairchild. In 2002, Lydia was in a very difficult situation. She was pregnant with her third child and was still separated from her partner, Jamie Townsend.

But despite this, she was determined to spend on her children and give them a better life than she had lived. But her life was completely turned upside down when she applied for government assistance in the state of Washington and was suddenly accused of corruption. The state said something shocking to her that she was not the biological mother of her children.

At that time, it was a very normal procedure for anyone to ask for government assistance for their children to apply for DNA analysis to prove the mother or father. And the result of the analysis was as follows. Jamie Townsend was confirmed to be the father.

But the DNA analysis said that Lydia was not the mother of the children. Lydia knew that this was impossible. She was the one who really carried her three children.

And she was the one who gave birth to them and raised them. And suddenly she was threatened to lose her two older children. And worse than that, the court ordered that there be a supervisor present during the birth of her third child to take DNA samples from the third child immediately after birth.

And after two weeks, the result returned to the same shocking result. Lydia was not the biological mother of her third child either. And that's despite the fact that there were witnesses who saw her when she gave birth to the third child with their own eyes.

The judge was convinced that she had to imitate the court in some way. And usually cases like this end at this point. But lawyer Lydia Allen Tindall discovered something that changed the whole world.

The lawyer found a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine about a woman named Karen Kagan from Boston. And the strange thing is that she was not biologically related to her children according to her DNA. And it turned out that Karen had a very rare genetic condition in humans called chimeria or chimerism.

What does that mean? Look, most people have one set of DNA in every cell of their body. But chimerians have two different sets of DNA. So how does this happen? It happens before a person is born.

And he is still a fetus if the mother is pregnant at the time. And it was still very early in the pregnancy. It happens that two fetuses merge together and complete as one person.

So the body produces one. But DNA is different, so different parts of the body for this one person. This study was published in 2002.

And it is the same year as Lydia's case. And the decisive evidence was Lydia. And it proved that she was also a chimerian.

Well, how did this prove it? A court-appointed laboratory took samples from Lydia. Samples of hair, skin, skin, blood, and so on. And in all these samples, they found only one type of DNA.

But when they examined her womb, that's when they found the surprise. They found another set of DNA different from the rest of the DNA in her body. And the sample they took from her womb was identical to the DNA of her three children.

And when they compared this DNA to the DNA of Lydia's mother, who is the grandmother of the children, the relationship between the grandmother and the children was confirmed. And then the case against Lydia was completely closed. And it was confirmed that she was the real mother of the children.

So what simply happened is that Lydia's children inherited their DNA from their real father. And they also inherited it from the twin brother of their mother, Lydia, who merged with the mother while she was still a fetus in her mother's womb or in her grandfather's womb. It's crazy.

But this is really medical facts. In the end, the case of Lydia became one of the first cases known publicly about the chimerian case. And it opened a very important discussion about the limits and accuracy of the analysis of DNA or the purposeful praise in legal cases.
