It was morning in the summer of 1870 and 10 year old Alice black curly hair was blowing fiercely in the wind as she ran in a field to catch William and Robert, twin boys, their blond golden hair glistening in the summer sun as they ran. Alice soon caught up to them and tagged them both before dropping to the ground gasping for air after running around in the hot sun for hours, Robert and William sat down next to her. After some time Alice, Robert, and William were looking up at the big fluffy clouds in the bright blue sky.
“I could really go for some cold lemonade right now” said Robert as he stood up brushing the dirt off from his pants. Alice and William stood up and brushed the dirt from their clothes as well.
“My mother made some fresh this morning,” said Alice, looking at the twins with their green eyes sparkling with excitement. Alice chuckled, “Come on let’s go to my house”
As they were walking through a forest on their way to Alice’s house, Alice’s dress caught onto a branch which sent her falling to the ground. William quickly turned around and saw Alice laying on the ground.
“Alice are you okay?” Ask William walking towards her with Robert both with a concerned expression.
Alice slowly sat up “Yeah I’m okay just feeling a little dizzy, I think I hit my head on something” Said Alice looking down to see what she hit her head on, she looked puzzled.
“Robert, William!” Alice shouted as she pointed at something “Look there!”
Robert and William looked to where she was pointing, there was something that looked like a handle to a trap door sticking out of the ground.
“It looks like a handle” said Robert
Alice stood up quickly and then all three of them tried to uncover what the handle was connected to, after a few minutes of pulling weeds and brushing away dirt it revealed a trap door. They looked at each other with a mixture of excitement and confusion.
“Come on let’s open it!” Robert shouted, grabbing the handle.
Robert pulled at the handle opening the trapped door. Inside the trapped door was an old looking spiral staircase with lanterns hanging on the walls. Robert took out a box of matches out of his pocket and took one of the lanterns on the staircase wall and lit the lantern. Robert headed down the stairs brushing away the cobwebs with William and Alice following right behind him. When they reached the end of the staircase there was a wooden door, Robert slowly opened the door to a dark room and walked in with William and Alic.
“Look there are some more lanterns on the wall” said William pointing to some of the lanterns.
Robert took out his matches and lit some of the other lanterns. As they looked around the room they saw some old wooden chests and a small living area with a bed and worn out desk. Alice walked over to open one of the chests but noticed it had a lock and looked at the other chests and saw they all had the same lock.
“All theses chest are locked” said Alice to William and Robert sounding disappointed
“Maybe there’s a key in the desk?” said Robert
Alice walked over to the desk and searched in the drawers.
“It looks like there’s a lot of journals in here” said Alice searching through the drawers.
Alice picked up a black notebook that looked a bit fancier than the others and opened it. Inside the notebook was a golden key.
“Hey I think this is the key” said Alice grabbing the key and placing the black notebook on the bed and walking over to the chests. Alice started unlocking the chest with William and Robert hovering over her waiting to see what was in the chest. Alice turned the key and opened the chest, they could not believe what they were seeing, their eyes grew wide with shock. In the chest were piles of gold coins! Alice, William, and Robert quickly opened the rest of the chest and each one was the same.
“This could be at least $20,000!” Shouted Robert with excitement.
“But why is all this money here?” Asked William “ it looks like this place hasn’t been touched in years! And why would anyone leave this much money?”
“Maybe the journals have some clues?” Said Alice
William, Alice, and Robert walked over to the desk opening the drawers and took three journals out. They split the journals amongst themselves and started reading the journals. The journal entries were dated in the year 1703, the journals talked about a pirate named Money Beard and about his adventures on sea and how he never got any money except for the one time he robbed another pirates boat and stole many chests full of money and stored it away in a secret cellar. Robert, William, and Alice were still in shock.
“What are we going to do with the money?” Asked Alice
“We’ll go to the bank and exchange it for modern money” said Robert “then we’ll split up the money evenly amongst ourselves”
“I agree” said Robert
“Me too” said Alice
Robert, William, and Alice lifted a chest all together and brought it to the bank. Once they got to the bank it was pretty busy, so they sat in line with their chest. After a half hour of waiting they were finally at the counter.
“Excuse me sir” said William politely to the man at the counter “we have a chest full of gold coins and we would like to know how much we could get for them”
The man at the counter looked a bit confused
“No problem, let me bring you to someone that can help” said the man at the counter “just follow me”
The man brought them Through a hall to a separate room with a big man sitting on a chair.
“Excuse me sir” the the man from the counter “but these kids would like to know how much these gold coins are worth”
“No problem” said the big man with a booming voice “come right in!”
The big man opened the chest and took out some gold coins. A few minutes later, the big man was done observing the coins.
“I’m sorry kids, but these are fake”
“Fake how?!” Shouted Robert “they look just like gold!”
“It does look like gold but it’s just iron pyrite made to look like a gold coin” said the man.
Feeling defeated Alice, William, and Robert left the bank with the chest and went back to the cellar. Once they got to the cellar they put the chest back and sat down.
“The journals didn’t say anything about it being fake!” Said Robert angrily, Alice gasped.
“Guys we forgot to look in one of the journals” said Alice pointing to the bed.
When Robert and William turned to look at the bed they noticed the black journal Alice took out before. William stood up and walked towards the bed and picked up the journal, he walked back to Robert and Alice and they all read it together. The entries in the black journal were about Money Beard going on his last adventure to find the pirate who he stole the fake coins from and get his revenge. After they finished reading the journal they all sighed in disappointment, after a while of sitting in quietness Alice stood up and looked at Robert and William.
“Do you still want lemonade?” Asked Alice
Robert and William laughed and stood up,
“Of course!” Said William and Robert together.
All three hooking arms started going back to Alice’s place for a cup of lemonade after their long and exhausting day. - THE END
