Who’s in charge
Conversation with my daughter

Every morning as I’m dropping off my daughter I say,
Make sure you have a good day
Make sure you have some fun
Make sure you learn something
Make some good memories
Who’s in charge
Her answer to the question is usually me. Sometimes it’s forceful, sometimes it’s questioning and every once in awhile she adds something about others and how they affect her. Questioning how she can be in charge.
In turn I answer
Well hon you’re in charge, you decide how things and others affect you. You can’t control people and what they say and what they do but you are in charge. You are in charge on how you allow it all to influence you and what you do.
You are in charge on how it makes you feel. You are in charge on how it shapes your actions. You are in charge on how you live your life. The outside is always trying to shape you into what it wants. It tries to influence you, heck it tries to control you. It wants you to believe that you are not in charge. It wants you to be what it wants you to be. This control makes them feel better than you. It’s your choice what you do, how you live, how you allow it all to not break you.
The important thing is to live, to experience life, to not allow it to turn you to what it wants. It’s important to be in charge to make life what you want. Will there be obstacles? Yes plenty but it’s important to keep moving forward, keep being in charge. Keep making your choices don’t let them take that from you.
Others will want to take your power take your ability to be in charge. You can either let them do that or you can fight hard to stay in control. It’s a hard battle to stay in charge of yourself but it’s worth it. Is being in charge a fix all? No because at times you will face hardship by keeping your autonomy. It is not the easy road but it keeps you in charge.
It keeps happiness in your hands and not at the whim of others. And the control of being happy is essential cause it then becomes easier to achieve. Be happy because of you, because of the things that you enjoy. Be happy, then bring others into that happiness. For that means your not seeking that happiness you already have it. Then a shared happiness is an amazing thing and if that shared happiness goes, you still have your happiness.
It allows you to live life for not everyone lives life. Many are dead and have been dead for a long time. For they live in death instead of living in life. They wear it like a comforting cloak and wrap it to themselves wanting to get out yet never doing so. So enjoy life, enjoy breathing, enjoy the many things that make you live. Find those things that give you joy and do them even when joy is not in your heart. These things will be reminders of you of your happiness of being in charge. Don’t let others take those things from you. Don’t let you take those things from you. Live to live, to enjoy every breath, every rain drop, every breeze. Life is a wonderful thing that we sometimes drown in sorrows that keep us down. Let it breathe, let it live, let it be and be in charge.
So make sure you have a good day
Make sure you have fun
Make sure you learn something
Make some good memories
Who’s in Charge?
Me
That’s right kid.

You put into words something I’ve been trying to explain to myself for years — thank you for this.
powerful, wise, true! Thanks for sharing your insight.
Congrats !!
I tell my daughters this, even though they are now grown up. I learned the hard way, after everyone walked all over me because of my mental health, and my kids were victims because of those people who thought they could rule me. Now, even after their tough ordeal, they know who they are, and what they want. They are learning!
Ja exactly, ee cant chang the world around us but we can change the inner world
It is an important lesson for every child to learn especially for young girls surrounded by the patriarchy; I think these conversations are beautiful.
