When Will Came Home.

By Joe PattersonPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

I will never forget the day that Will first came home. It was during the weekend of the state fair and I had a three day weekend that started on a Thursday due to a teacher workday. Me and my sisters ended up going to both my dad and my grandma’s house for the weekend after going to the fair on Thursday night. When my older sister talked to my grandma during a phone call in the early hours on Friday before me and my dad dropped her and my younger sister off at my grandma’s house, my grandma told her that she had a surprise for us all. We were curious as to what the surprise was until we stopped at my uncle’s and my dad let it slip that my grandma got us all a dog. It was funny because me and my sister had already guessed that partially due to my grandma telling us that the surprise was something we could play with.

From the jump I thought this news was both very shocking and surprisingly interesting because my grandma had expressed interest in getting a dog before, but I never took her seriously. It turns out that a woman she was taking care of at her job had few dogs that she was giving away due to being in the final days of her life. I initially did not see the dog that first day we dropped my sisters off at my grandma’s because I did not go inside with them when me and my dad dropped them off. It would not be until the next day on Saturday that I would see him for the first time.

When me and my dad went back to my grandma’s on Saturday, they opened the door and I was greeted by the presence of an active small dog that was of the Pug breed. The first thing that came to mind as soon as I laid eyes on the dog was “whoa that’s the little dog that was in “Men In Black” Will Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones”. Ironically, the dog’s name was Will. This was so fascinating to me because I had never seen a pug in real life and I did not even know that they were called pugs. At first glance all I could think about was how active Will was as he jumped on me and my dad and continued to run back and forth with excitement in the presence of company. During that first night of meeting Will I didn’t give much thought as to whether I liked him or not or whether I was happy to have a dog, I just thought about how shocked I was that my grandma actually had him and how new this was for me. It would not be until the next day on Sunday night that it would be clear to me what Will meant to me as family.

On Sunday night me and my dad joined my sisters at my grandma’s house before my mother came to pick us up and take us home. That night my grandbb my a had other company besides us and she put Will on his leash in the hallway. When he was left alone while everyone else was in the den talking and watching TV Will would bark a lot. That was until I would go in the hallway to see him and pet him while to bring him ease. This was moment I grew attached to Will because he was very embracing of me as I kept him company and gave me some dog licks of love when I stayed close by him. It was at this moment that realized that not only did I have a dog of my own, but that I also loved him. I knew from then on that I was going to love Will forever.

For the next 16 years Will brought nothing but love and embrace to the lives of my family because he remained part of our family. When he passed away in 2019 after having such a long and loving life he was sorely missed and the greatest memory I will always have of him was when he first came home. Will was and will always be family and though he has passed on I will carry him and all the loving memories he gave me in my heart forever.
