Homemade Rice Krispie treats

My first time making Rice Krispie Treats

By Diani AlvarengaPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

One of my favorite snacks is Rice Krispie treats. I tried this delicious snack when I was in middle school. I enjoy its texture, and it is made with marshmallows, making me love it even more. The first time I ever tried homemade Rice Krispie treats was when I was 16 years old, and I honestly thought it was way better than the ones sold in stores. After a few years have passed, I decided to try making this delicious treat myself. Homemade recipes are just better because they have a unique taste. I went to the store and bought the necessary ingredients.

As I said before, everyone has different methods when it comes to cooking recipes. What matters is that the recipe becomes a success, but if it becomes a failure, try again or try a different approach for it. Rice Krispie treats can be made through the oven, microwave, or stovetop. I decided to make them on the stovetop. In the future, when I make these treats again, I will see how they taste by making them in the oven; it may be that there is a difference in the flavors when making them in the oven and making them on the stove.

For this recipe, the ingredients I used were:

  • Seven squares of butter
  • Six cups of tiny-sized marshmallows
  • Six cups of Rice Krispie cereal

I know that some people add sugar when making this recipe but I felt it was unnecessary because the marshmallows themselves contain sugar.

Butter

First, I put seven small squared pieces of butter into a pan and then waited for the butter to melt completely.

mini marsmallows

Next, I poured six cups of mini marshmallows into the pan; because the measuring cup I had was two cups, I only had to fill it three times since two cups used three times is equal to six cups total. After I poured in the mini marshmallows, I began to stir until it was all melted.

Stirring marshmallows

While stirring the marshmallows, I made sure that the heat was not too high. I put it in low to medium heat.

Melted Marshmallows

Once the marshmallows had completely melted, I turned off the stove and begin to pour the six cups of Rice Krispie cereal. It’s important to make sure that the cereal is mixing well with the melted marshmallows.

After a few minutes of stirring, I turned off the stove, and I had to look for something in which I can pour the mixture. Fortunately, I came upon a container that was suitable for the mixture.

Container for Rice Krispie Treats

Before I placed the mixture of Rice Krispie cereal with marshmallows in the container, I sprayed butter so that it doesn’t become sticky. I then used a spatula to evenly spread out the mixture in the container and flatten it out a bit. After it was spread out evenly, I used a knife and made square-shaped pieces. In total I made 12 squared shape Rice Krispie treats.

Rice Krispie Treats

My final results were uneven Rice Krispie Treats. It does not matter. However, what matters is the taste. I made this treat at midnight; everyone was asleep. The next day, I asked my dad his opinion on how I did; he told me he liked them, and then my mom tried them, and her response was the same. Honestly, I loved how they turned out because they were not too sweet. I feel that if it was too sugary, then I would not be able to eat them. Cooking this recipe brought some joy to my heart because I was learning how to do my favorite childhood snack. I believe that if you have a favorite snack or dessert it would be a good idea to try to make it on your own so that it can help you determine if you prefer it homemade or bought.
