"I don't know why you have to say things like that," Mel said, as they walked home in the snow.

"Things like what?" Paul asked, concentrating on where he placed his feet, his coccyx still reminding him pointedly about a fall from some time ago.

The snow was descending and it was really quite pretty. The night was dark and ovals lightly floated past black, the flakes swirling and circling as they fell. Romantic, Paul thought, as his foot glided on a hidden sheet, disguised by the treacherous snow. He loved snow but it was his enemy.

Mel was striding ahead. "Those personal comments about me. 'Mel loves it when I cook dinner. Makes her feel dominant' or 'Mel loves it when I clean the toilets so she doesn't have to deal with my crap.' It makes me sound like I'm bossing you around all the time. Like I'm some sort of diva."

Paul was surprisingly quiet. He would normally have tried to defend himself but there was no response.

She turned around. There was no sign of him. Where had he gone?

"Paul? Paul!" she called and ran back, worried about where he'd disappeared to.

When he'd slipped, in his mad scramble, he'd fell and rolled into the ditch at the side of the path.

When Mel caught up to him, he was spitting snow from his mouth and looked ridiculous.

She was overwhelmed with relief and love. The man was inept socially and physically but he was hers.

Perspective is a funny thing. Sometimes, things that seem important can instantly become trivial, in the wake of a reality check. Loved it!

Hahaha. She was "overwhelmed with relief and love." She's a good woman. I would have busted out laughing, cuz I'm cruel like that.

I noticed that you listed the word count for this story as 366. The challenge states that the story length must be exactly 250 words in length, or am I missing something? I noticed a few entries that list the same 366 word count.

  • Awww, your story screams, "He's a dork but he's my dork!" This was just soooo adorable!

  • That's me, socially & physically awkward as they come. Endearing & lovable I'm not quite so sure. Beautifully & warmly told, Rachel.

  • This was such a real life story. Our spouse, significant others all have flaws but we love still love them because they’re ours

I love this story, Rachel, and am still laughing at that last line and the resulting imagery in my mind even as I type. 'She was overwhelmed with relief and love. The man was inept socially and physically but he was hers.' Just pasting it into this comment box makes me laugh even more!

  • This is a delightful read and I plan to quit while I’m ahead & end my day on a positive note… 🤩

Aw...this was unexpected. But, still rather sweet and I echo what Hannah said. The stupid things seem to get brushed aside in relationships when serious things come along. What a wonderful little entry into the challenge. Loved it, Ms Deeming!

It's always telling how resentment vanished in a wee crisis.
