The smell of burning, and charred earth jolts you awake. You open your heavier than normal eyes to realize that you no longer are in your childhood bedroom. You take in the horrible vision of an open field, that looks like it once was filled with bustling life. Only to be now known as a black, smoking, and desolate wasteland.
You see the freshly blazed bones of what once was running for their lives, only to succumb to the flames of a burning wildfire. You scramble to your feet, only to notice that the ground is still hot with ash. How did you get here? Yet an even better question is… how can you get home? As tears start welling up in your eyes, you notice a sparkle of light gleaming upon your chest. You look down to see a heart shaped locket, that you have never seen before.
Before you can give the locket a second thought, a near deafening sound blasts your ears, bringing you to your knees in pain. The awful sound is coming from the fire off in the distance, that seems to be looming closer.
As panic fills within you, you decide to run. Sprinting as fast as your legs can carry you, you realize the sound getting louder, and the blazing heat getting warmer against your back. Regrettably, you look back, and see the wildfire, just feet away from you. Then even scarier still, this giant wall of fire, seems to be running, as if it was following your every move!
Suddenly, the mysterious locket starts to become unbearably heavy, as it glows with an eerie illumination. You cannot run, as you are paralyzed by the glow of the heart shaped trinket. Your gaze falls upon the now living, sizzling wildfire bolting straight towards you! Your hopes of escaping seem to burn away with the rest of your surroundings.
As you close your eyes to accept your seemingly terrible fate. All goes silent. It seems like ages since your eyes were gripped shut with all of your strength, slowly and carefully, you open to see an awe inspiring sight! You are within the wildfire, as if you are part of it! You are not hot, nor harmed, as you look to see the once soft luminous light of your newfound locket, a radiant, sun-like, blinding shine!
Is this what saved you? You wonder. As the flames dance before you, and seem to shape and form images before your very eyes. As you pay close attention, you grasp what they are saying… this wildfire is no natural phenomenon, but a living being, filled with pain and sorrow.
You speak, for the first time within this waking experience, and ask, why are you showing me this? All of a sudden, the flames disperse, and in their place is a huge golden city. You try to walk towards the amazing sight, but realize you are still paralyzed by your lockets power.
The images you see go from awe inspiring, to sinister, when you see people, of all shapes, sizes, colors and creeds, chained and bound together, being lead through the enormous city of gold, by a green skinned creature.
You focus on the green abomination, leading the poor trapped, and seemingly sick humans into a building. The last and final image shows the green creature escaping the building, as the most horrific thing happens, the building goes up in flames!
As your eyes start tearing up once again, the images fade, and the surrounding of flames return. With sad images returning, you realize this wildfire, that once was treacherously scary, IS that group of chained humans, and the awful noise, is simply their collective screams.
You know what you have to do, you have to save them, you declare. With that, the flames recede, the locket becomes lighter and lighter, as you see the golden city before you, now rusted and dank, with a dark aura about it. You see that you can now move.
All you can think about is saving those poor unfortunate people, from their collective fiery prison. All other thoughts of going home, become secondary. You find yourself running at top speed toward the now rusty city, and upon arrival, you are seized from behind!
All goes dark, and you awaken, chained and bound, just as the others were. You look to see the fearful and even more disturbing image of the green monster, coming toward you in leaps and bounds. It stops just inches before you, and speaks. You are the last human. You must suffer the fate of the rest of your people.
He goes to grab you by the arm, and he jolts back with the sound of a loud spark. He grimaces and yelps. You look to see your locket, smoking with some sort of power. That must be what hurt the beastly thing! Suddenly, the chains you are bound by, shatter and break, you’re free!
You think of running when, your mind gets an idea! You let the gruesome green creature run towards you, then, as he grows close enough to touch, you rip off your locket, and push it onto the skin of his chest.
The creature wide eyed and stunned, looks down only to burst into a flash of blinding light. When your eyes acclimate, only the locket, and blackened bones remain. A voice seemingly from beyond speaks loud, echoing throughout the city, that now seems to have its golden glow back!
You are very brave human! You have saved us all, from the creatures tyranny! As the voice fades, the wildfire appears, only to separate into thousands of tiny flames, and each flame turn into a human! The crowd of humans cheer and smile, as you see the mysterious heart shaped locket, levitate with a luminous energy once again.
The light becomes brighter, and you find your eyes getting heavy, and you suddenly collapse from tiredness. You wake to feel a familiar sensation, the crisp cool feeling of the sheets on your bed. Your eyes fly open, to see you’re home!
Confused and groggy, you look on your nightstand, to see the mysterious heart shaped locket, laying open in plain sight. This locket… you remember now! This locket was given to you by your late grandmother! Although, you could never get it open…
You rise to your feet to look inside it’s heart shaped walls, and you see an inscription. It says: Live your adventure, even if it’s just a fantasy. Right then and there, you realized what you were meant to do, not be a monster mashing hero, but someone, who could make other people the hero in their own minds.
You were meant to be a writer, so other people could read your stories, so they could truly live their adventure.
Fin.
