The Devil's Cut
a drabble
“Comrade, finally you’re awake.”
The voice was smooth, sensual.
A flickering incandescent bar was all that lit the white, sterile room. All Vladimir remembered was everything going black. He tried to move his arms and found them strapped to the gurney.
“Who are you? Release me. I am a god!” Vladimir’s heart drummed a fearful dirge for the first time in years.
A tall man slid from the shadows donning a jet-black suit and lit a golden cigarette. Sweat rolled down Vladimir’s temples as he approached.
“Ahh Gods…Ask Prometheus the price of false godhood. I always take my cut. Always.”

War made for odd couples. To Private Jim Mclellan, Sepp seemed a good man; better at least than some of the monsters he heard stories of deeper into the Reich. Real monsters. This Sepp almost reminded Jim of his uncle; the one from Wisconsin he met a few times at Weddings.

After the Storm
After the storm of winter snow there sat a small bear by the name Ted, of course. He loves the snow and likes to roll around in it making all sorts of trails and whatever he has a mind to do. He wondered where all the people are, but in a way, he is hoping that they are all snug in the homes maybe drinking hot chocolate-one of his favorite drinks with mini-marshmallows and eating something homemade for he likes this winter wonderland all to himself to romp and play and maybe even catch some fish down by the river.

Matthew, there’s something very assured about how you handle power and inevitability in such a tight space. It feels like you weren’t aiming to impress so much as to land the moment cleanly and that makes it stick.

Well written and truly chilling. Praying for an end to all the abhorrent conflicts. I just saw a report about the Russian army press-ganging people from Africa and other places to join its vanguard as they run out of soldiers. It's sad enough when people fight for their own land and family and die. This is just too much.
