The Night of White Umbrellas
a micro fiction
This street often speaks. On the night of the white umbrellas, many voices made their way to me. But I did not listen, for their shadows swallowed them before I could. Street lamps became my saving grace. And I watched the voices. I never stopped until the dawn came and I could see them no more.
People ask me what they look like. “A particular kind of light,” I answer. It’s more than that, though. It chases itself, laughs and squeals like a child. It teaches me how to see beauty in the very air that surrounds me.

Chapter Thirteen It was a very good thing that I had worked so hard to get our virtual reference services going as quickly as I had. It seemed we would be using it for the foreseeable future, at least. It was the Monday after our first full week of working from home. On the heels of grief, pain bears down hard. On the heels of death, pain awakens the quiet place between the end of our own life and now. Feeling anything is like seeing a film and in black and white, slow motion, all sound turned off. Just watching. Gritting teeth, awkward smiles and bloody red eyes move around, scanning the others who are feeling something I don't want to feel, but I do. Escapism is all I have ever known. ~
