Working for yourself is a fascinating journey, but it’s worth talking about it without the filters, showing both the highs and the lows of this profession.

The Hunter’s Shift: Work Before the Work 🏹

The biggest myth about being a freelancer is the belief that we spend most of our time doing what we are actually good at. Far from it! Half of the success is being a specialist, but the other half—the less glamorous part—is being a full-time "opportunity hunter" 🔍. A freelancer's daily life often involves long, tedious hours spent scouring job platforms, refreshing inboxes, and analyzing new portals that promise the world but often deliver nothing but another dose of frustration 📩.

Looking for work is a job in itself. It is a stage that is mentally taxing because, unlike a 9-to-5, no one pays you for "readiness." The time spent writing proposals, tailoring your portfolio, or negotiating is time invested in the hope of a return, but with no guarantee of success ⏳. These are the moments where patience is put to the ultimate test.

The Financial Rollercoaster: From Breaking Norms to Ten Dollars 🎢

Another issue rarely discussed openly is financial unpredictability. Freelancing is a sine wave that can make your head spin. There are days when your "daily rate goes way above the norm" 🚀. These are the moments of euphoria when projects flow one after another, clients accept quotes without blinking, and you feel like the world is yours. In those moments, it feels like there is no ceiling.

However, that same wave can crash down hard. There are days—and they can be painful—where after hours of effort, you earn $10 and that’s where the "action ends" 💸. It’s a brutal reality check. You stare at the screen and wonder if what you’re doing even makes sense. This financial instability requires immense discipline and the ability to manage not just your wallet, but your emotions. You have to learn that "lean times" can hit in the middle of the week and not let a $10 day define your worth as a professional 🧠.

Empty Time or Invested Time? 📚

The key to surviving in this industry is a shift in perspective. I’ve realized that the days when work is slow or non-existent are actually the most valuable moments in my calendar. It’s not wasted time—it’s time to invest in the only capital no one can take away from me: myself ✨.

When the market is quiet, I don’t sit idly. It’s the perfect time to learn new things, take courses, upgrade my skills, or dive into industry secrets I’ve been putting off 🎓. It was during these gaps that my fascination with writing truly blossomed. Without those downtimes, "404: Reality Not Found" would likely never have been written. Writing became my safety valve and a new direction for growth ✍️. Paradoxically, the lack of gigs allowed me to discover my potential as an author. Every hour spent reading or training is a brick laid for higher rates in the future.

Rome Wasn't Built in a Day 🏰

Finally, it’s worth revisiting an old but painfully true cliché: Rome (or Krakow, as we say!) wasn't built in a day. In a world that expects instant results and "overnight" success, freelancing teaches humility. Success in this business isn't a fluke or the result of one "lucky" break. It’s the result of boring, repetitive, and often invisible work 🛠️.

Only with hindsight do I see that only consistency and REGularity in action can take us to the heights 🏔️. It’s about getting up every day, even when you know you might only earn that $10. It’s about sending the hundredth proposal, even though the previous ninety-nine went unanswered. It’s about regularly investing in your growth, even when it feels like no one is watching.

Freelancing is a marathon, not a sprint 跑🏃‍♂️. If you stick to your principles, invest in yourself during the quiet moments, and don’t let the bad days break you, eventually, your professional reality will stop displaying a 404 error. It will become a solid, hand-built foundation that can weather any market storm 🏠.
