Using profanity is good for your health and soul

By Mark Wesley Pritchard Published 11 months ago 5 min read

WARNING! This story contains strong, coarse language that's not suitable for all readers. If you don't mind me cursing, then you'll really love the topic for this story. It's going to be so goddamn great.

I've been a creator on Vocal for the last several years. I do have a bit of a sailor mouth and that's how I express myself sometimes. Studies have shown that cursing is beneficial to your health. Some of the benefits includes the reduction of stress, improved performance, and reduction of pain. Swearing is normal in almost every aspect: in TV shows, movies, the songs that we listen to, etc. We were told as children not to swear and that it's bad. For example, when I was in Pre-K, yours truly got in trouble for telling someone to shut up. Today, it's a harmless word and everyone says it without rarely any consequences.

Last year, I was listening to some music and while browsing to add more songs to my playlist, I discovered a song from Shania Twain called Pretty Liar from her sixth studio album, Queen Of Me, which was released in February 2023. This was the first album of hers that had a Parental Advisory label. The chorus of this song got me so giddy and I was like, "Hell yeah!"

Oh, your pants are on fire (Your pants are on fire)

You're such a fucking liar (Such a fucking liar, liar)

Another level higher

Your pants are on fire

I've been a huge fan of Shania for many years and had never heard her swear before. I consider Pretty Liar as one of my top five songs of hers. Also, I loved the fact that she is the epitome of female empowerment. I listen to this song occasionally and have it in my playlist.

Here's an unknown fun fact you didn't know about me: I love watching stand-up comedy. The raunchy, edgy kind that makes me laugh. Two of my favorite comedians are Eddie Murphy and the late George Carlin. Carlin, who passed away in 2008 at age 71, was an example of someone who wasn't afraid to push limits, especially when talking about taboo topics. His dark comedy and truth bombs are the reason why I'm still a fan of his today. George Carlin's comedy specials are worth watching. One in particular was his 1972 "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" monologue that ended up at the center of a Supreme Court case in 1978. In a 5-4 decision, the high court ruled that Carlin's routine was indecent, but not obscene. They didn't ban content like this, but restricted broadcasts to certain times of the day. In case you were wondering what those seven words were, they were "shit", "piss", "fuck", "cunt", "cocksucker", "motherfucker", and "tits".

Another comedian I loved and still do to this day was the late Bernie Mac. In one of his comedy specials, he told a story about a white man who wondered why black people use the word motherfucker. Mac's response was that motherfucker was a noun and described a person, place, or thing. Samuel L. Jackson is widely known for using that word in many of his movies. I jokingly said that he might as well trademark that word.

So you must be wondering what my first swear word was. It was the word shit and I felt good saying it. However, I have my limits of who or where I can or can't swear at. I don't use profanity at work, because some people could be offended by it. With that being said, I've never understood why people got so easily up in arms over vulgar language. When I watch YouTube videos, most of the creators would censor the swear words, when we know what they're saying. I'm not an idiot and them censoring certain words to be yes men to YouTube irritates me so much and it's unnecessary. One of my major pet peeves is people who use fake cuss words. Either swear for real or don't, but it's so cringey to hear someone say words like darn, freaking, shoot, or any creative alternative version of a swear word. People, especially those who are religious, are suddenly shocked about the naughty language we use. No one is damn perfect and don't act like you haven't uttered a single swear word in your life. Why do we have to associate profanity with one's morality? It shouldn't, because everyone does it. Sure, there are those who don't swear at all, mostly due to religious reasons. However, no one can be a good person all the time, because it's not realistic. It comes off as phony and fake. Sometimes, you have to be a bit of a badass.

Swearing is better than getting into a physical altercation with someone. I swear occasionally and I'm unapologetic about having a filthy mouth. It's how I get my points across. I'm a nice and easygoing person, but I also love being edgy at times. The average American belts out 80 to 90 swear words a day, according to multiple sources. Uttering a curse word once in a while isn't going to ruin your life. Don't live the rest of your life being such a goody two-shoes all the time. That's not the way life is supposed to be enjoyed. Have a bit of a danger in you. Otherwise, you'll end up becoming a people pleaser. Honestly, perfect people are full of shit. They think that they're so much better than everyone else because they refuse to swear. I may have a bit of a slick mouth and seen as an asshole to many people, I'm still loved by others who love that I'm just myself. I don't like censoring myself, especially in the stories I write. It's because I can express myself in ways that are beneficial to me and also to be brutally honest. Writing has been a form of therapy for me and getting stuff off my chest really helped. In closing, in case you're curious about what my favorite swear words are, they are fuck, shit, bullshit, and motherfucker.
