A couple was saved for more than 12 days after the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, but children died. Two hundred sixty-six hours after the earthquake that killed more than 44,000 people in parts of Turkey and Syria, a couple was rescued from beneath a collapsed apartment building.
Tragically, their children were killed, according to Saturday's reports from Turkish state media. After the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck on February 6, search teams are still extricating survivors and recovering the dead from the rubble more than 12 days later.
According to state-run Anadolu, a search team from Kyrgyzstan saved Samir Muhammed Accar, 49, his wife Ragda, 40, and their 12-year-old son. Later on, the boy passed away. The couple's son passed away in a hospital, and two other kids also died.
Around 11:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, rescuers pulled the couple from beneath the rubble and hurried them to get medical attention. On camera, medical personnel could be seen treating the man as he lay on a stretcher. In addition to being saved, their 12-year-old child later passed away in a hospital.
The couple's other two children were discovered to be deceased. Mehmet Oz, a Turkish-American TV personality and former Senate candidate, visited Samir Muhammed Accar, according to Anadolu, which shared photos of their encounter on social media. According to Anadolu Accar, he answered Oz's question about how he survived by drinking his own urine.
Additionally, Accar reportedly told Oz that after the first few days, he could no longer hear the voices of his children. The death toll exceeds 44,000. According to Yunus Sezer, the head of Turkey's disaster and emergency management agency, the country had over 40,000 fatalities.
