Here's My Exploration into the MMORPG Genre.

The combat itself wasn't as good as New World's, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story aspect. I will most likely be revisiting this game at a later date.

Before 2020, I didn't play an MMORPG. I know it may be surprising to my readers since I've been playing computer games my entire life.

But I generally stuck to either single-player games or regular online games such as Rocket League and Call of Duty.

Near the end of 2021, a game called New World was released. I frequently saw the game on the TikTok ForYou page from creators hyping up the game.

At the same time, a few of my friends were telling me about how good of a game it looked like.

So immediately after the release, a few friends and I bought the game and immediately started playing.

I don't know exactly what it was about the game, but I instantly fell in love with it.

I played through the entire story aspect with my friends, and I still actively play the game to this date.

Unfortunately, my friends stopped playing, but that didn't stop me.

After spending a few hundred hours playing New World, I grew curious about other MMORPGs.

The ones that immediately caught my attention consisted of:

  • The Elder Scrolls Online
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic
  • Lost Ark
  • Black Desert Online

In terms of gameplay, The Elder Scrolls Online was the most similar to New World since it is also an action-combat MMORPG.

I played through the storyline alongside one of my friends for around 30–40 hours.

The combat itself wasn't as good as New World's, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story aspect. I will most likely be revisiting this game at a later date.

The next game that made sense to try was Black Desert Online since it is also an action-combat game.

I didn't spend as much time in this game as I did in Elder Scrolls, but it was still a moderately enjoyable experience.

Around about the time I decided to look into other MMORPGs, coincidentally was around the time Lost Ark was released.

Like New World, lost Ark is also developed by Amazon Games Studios. But unlike New World, Lost Ark is not an action-combat MMORPG.

You use the left side of your keyboard for your abilities and use your mouse to move around. Although I did spend a few hours playing this game, I just seriously disliked this gameplay method.

Star Wars: The Old Republic was the last game I tried.

I was seriously excited by the idea of an MMORPG set in the Star Wars universe. But that excitement quickly vanished when I realized it was not action-combat.

This might be a seriously unpopular opinion, but I just don't like tab-target games. I much prefer being in control of each individual attack in an MMORPG.

For that reason, I didn't spend much time playing Star Wars. Because of the fact that I dislike tab-target MMORPGs, I didn't bother trying games such as World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XIV Online.

Honestly, I believe since New World was my first MMORPG, it set the standard too high in terms of gameplay mechanics.

I know New World is not the most popular MMORPG by any means, but most people cannot deny the PvP combat in that game is amazing.

I know there are a bunch of games out there that have a way better story, setting, quests, and overall player experience compared to New World.

But I just can't put myself through enough since I dislike the gameplay mechanics.

With that being said, there are actually two MMORPGs I'm seriously looking forward to, which I believe may pull me away from New World.

The first is called Throne and Liberty.

Throne and Liberty are being developed by NCSOFT, who are also the developers of previous Lineage games.

There isn't much information on this game as of yet, but there is a very cool trailer which you can watch here:

The MMORPG I'm most excited about, though, is called Ashes of Creation. It is being developed by Intrepid Studios, which is a small game development company.

They are working toward creating an MMORPG better than all the current mid-tier examples. They are a team of die-hard MMORPG fans who just want to make a properly decent MMORPG.

The game is being built on Unreal Engine 5, which will undoubtedly look fantastic. They had their alpha 1 period last year and hopefully will have an alpha 2 period soon.

I seriously believe this game alone will pull me away from New World. The gameplay honestly looks a lot better than New World.

The Map size is significantly more extensive, with a much larger diversity between different territories and continents.

Their YouTube channel has very frequent updates on the development process, which you can view here:

My exploration into the MMORPG genre has just begun, and I still have many games to explore.

Although I prefer action-combat MMORPGs over tab-target games, I suspect I'll still experiment with a wide variety of different games.

If you play any MMORPGs, let me know which you play and why you play those ones by leaving a comment in the comments section.

I'd love to hear about it.
