My Review of "Venom: The Last Dance"

This movie is a bit of a mess but I can kind of see why some people like it so much.

Venom: The Last Dance is one of the last movies I thought I'd see in 2024. Some of you may remember how much I hated the Venom: Let there be carnage. That was only 3 years ago, but I'm still traumatized by how terrible that movie was. Somehow, I was coerced to see this movie and I'm glad to say that it was better than that last movie.

This movie starts off a little convoluted. If you've watched end credit sequences you might geek out because Eddy starts off in that end sequence. He gets ripped from the regular MCU timeline and into his regular timeline. There's no explanation of what happened and why this is even in the movie in the first place. If anything it's more for fanfare. I think it was totally unnecessary other than to have some continuity since that end sequence went nowhere.

The movie then goes on it's on tangent storyline that doesn't really fit the rest of the other movies that followed before it. There's a new big bad villain in this case. He's after Venom because Venom is the one symbiote that has some sort of codex key to unlock his imprisonment. Despite being imprisoned in some weird dimension he's able to send other aliens from his room to go after Venom. I was thinking why don't you just get out? You don't really need the codex if you can teleport these things out.

There will be a lot of that weird logic throughout this movie that doesn't make sense. This is a popcorn film. You must shut off your brain to enjoy this one because it plays out like some bonkers looney tunes movie.

Meanwhile, Eddie and Venom are trying to go to New York. They think they can clear their name there somehow. The government seems to be after them for murder. That's not the only group after them. There's an underground military group that works on aliens. They want Venom so they can study him. Then they discover the weird aliens trying to chase down Venom for his codec.

They give these weird obscure rules of how the codec is being detected. It wasn't really clear to me. It was more like whatever it became convenient the alien would be able to see that Venom had the codec available. I also thought it was weird how character's positions on things would constantly change on the spot.

There are other symbiotes in this movie. They know about Venom having the codec and even tell the military that it would be beneficial to kill Venom or Brock because of this. If that's the case, then why do the symbiotes help out Venom later on in the movie? It doesn't make sense.

Sequences in the beginning of the movie like the acid shower sequence are only shown to the user and the audience yet Venom knows about this secret and how it's performed. How did they know this it doesn't make sense. Why do they even need to do this? He could have just ripped open the acid things himself.

There's too many of these weird changes and weird understandings of logic in this movie. It's so outrageous, my mind shut down because it was so messed up. That's when I was able to kind of enjoy this movie. The action sequences were frantic and plentiful. Although, I would complain because it's in the dark and everything was dark colored, things were hard to see.

One of the saving graces was the innocent family that they discover in the middle of the movie. That was nice I guess. This movie also caters to animal lovers. I think they probably did some studies of what people liked and added them to this movie. It's the stereotypical, only villains can do bad things to animals kind of thing and the audience ate it all up. I'm seeing this is becoming a trend in movies nowadays. Pets are a big thing in North American culture and they're becoming bigger parts of movies.

Overall, It wasn't a movie for me. I can see how some people can enjoy these movies but there were too many holes for me to totally enjoy this one. There's tons of pandering. I think they marketed this one to be a family film while adding a little swearing and violence to keep it edgy enough for kids to love it. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10.
