New 'Moon Knight' Poster And Trailer Released

During the Super Bowl LVI weekend, we had a number of big trailers dropped for upcoming movies and television series. While everyone was enjoying the Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness trailer, Marvel Studios also did a bit of a side load by dropping a new Moon Knight poster and trailer in the run-up to the release of the series on Disney+.

Moon Knight follows Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc's enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.

The poster is a very clever mash-up of Oscar Isaac as both Marc Spector and the titular Moon Knight. Just like with Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, the poster designers at Marvel Studios have pulled out all the stops on creating a great poster for Moon Knight. Here is the visually stunning poster, the result of that creativity:

First shown during the highly coveted Super Bowl commercial slot, the new trailer continues the theme of the dual personas of Marc Spector and Moon Knight. We start off with Steven Grant struggling with the hallucinations and/or memories and trying to make some sense out of them. It is clear he is unable to differentiate between being awake and asleep. It is cool to see the way Oscar Isaac portrays the different personas with different accents to make it clear who he is at that moment.

One brief shot shows Marc Spector in a field with what looks like a mummy wrapped in bandages behind him. This is sure to be Egyptian deity Khonshu who will end up playing a large part of the Marc Spector/Moon Knight story. Khonshu presents himself as the Egyptian god of the moon although he is actually an elder god who is millions of years old. The scene with the pyramid and purple lightning is possibly the moment when Moon Knight gets his powers and becomes the avatar of Khonshu. Khonshu needs an avatar on earth as he is stuck in another dimension and cannot physically manifest on Earth. In the comics, Khonshu really hates the other gods so it will be interesting to see whether he will use Moon Knight as his avatar to exact some revenge on these other gods.

There is also a clever shot of Steven Grant looking in a mirror and seeing Marc Spector instead in the reflection. We get our first real take on Ethan Hawke, who plays Arthur Harrow, discussing how he sees chaos in Marc Spector:

"The voices in your head... there's chaos in you. Embrace the chaos."

It seems like Arthur Harrow is also tuned in to the power of Egyptian artifacts as he can be seen wearing bracelets and holding a staff emblazoned with Egyptian symbols. It looks like he is using these to unlock powers. 

The final scene shows Moon Knight catching one of his Crescent Darts, one of his primary weapons. They are useful for both close combat as well as a ranged weapon like a shuriken. They do have a batarang kind of feel about them. 

Moon Knight is shaping up to be quite a dark series, which is unsurprising given the background in the comics. Do not be surprised if we see links not only to the upcoming Blade movie but also a possible tie-in with the Black Knight from the Eternals movie as well. Could it be that Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios are looking to introduce the Midnight Sons into the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point, which Moon Knight and Blade are members of in the comics? It would be great to see a darker superhero team come into existence in the MCU.

Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Mohamed Diab, Jeremy Slater, and Oscar Isaac are the executive producers. 

Marvel Studios’ original television series Moon Knight will be streaming exclusively on Disney+ beginning on March 30, 2022.
