The Parenting Ending Explained

Andras' Real Motivation & Fate

By WHB KHNPublished 11 months ago 4 min read

The horror-comedy with Beetlejuice inspiration The Parenting answers the questions of Andras' fate and motivation with a number of entertaining twists that culminate in a satisfying conclusion. When Josh and Rohan first introduce their families at a rental home in the middle of the woods, they are in for a big surprise, as the trailer for The Parenting makes clear.

Their problems initially arise because the characters in The Parenting are incredibly dissimilar individuals. Josh's family is relaxed and vulgar, whereas Rohan's family is stiff and focused on appearances. The problem, however, shifts when repeatedly entering the Wi-Fi password calls forth Andras, a demonic poltergeist. They choose to fight back even though he makes their lives a living hell. In the end, the happy conclusion conveys a crucial lesson about putting aside disagreements and cooperating.

How Josh & Rohan’s Families Defeat Andras in The Parenting

How precisely Josh and Rohan's families will vanquish the poltergeist, Andras, is the main mystery throughout The Parenting. Josh and Rohan decide that killing the host is the best course of action. Josh is given the gun by Rohan to shoot him. He doesn't want to give up the man he loves, though. He attempts to take the demon inside of him in the hopes of dying as a result. But this turns out to be the secret to finally defeating Andras.

Andras becomes confused about who to possess because multiple people are simultaneously calling forth the demon, which keeps him outside the body. He needs a host body in order to survive. The others join in, inviting Andras to possess them after realizing it is weakening the poltergeist. He eventually dies and assumes his true form outside the body. Frank ends Andras permanently by stepping on his neck to mark his defeat. Considering that he spent the entire film assuming Frank's body and destroying his relationships, this seems like a fitting move.

The Reason Josh Suggests Rohan at the End of Parenting

Josh becomes anxious about the prospect of Rohan proposing to him at the beginning of The Parenting, when their friend Sara accidentally texts him about it. Therefore, it's a nice surprise when Josh pops the question to Rohan at the end of The Parenting. It appears that Rohan's attitude toward the proposal changes around the time he confronts his mother.

The majority of Josh and Rohan's arguments stem from Rohan's preference for appeasing his parents over standing by his boyfriend. After a while, Rohan realizes that he is ignoring his partner and behaves differently, siding with Josh rather than his parents. The last change in perspective occurs when Rohan attempts to give his life to save Josh, demonstrating his commitment to their bond. Josh eventually gains the confidence to proceed with an engagement.

An explanation of Andras' motivation, abilities, and backstory

The main antagonist in Max's horror-comedy is Andras, a 400-year-old poltergeist, but his abilities, motivation, and past aren't disclosed until The Parenting's conclusion. The Demonology book that the families discover in Allie's belongings, along with the fact that Andras has Frank and the dog, demonstrate his powers. Andras can control the weather, scream at supersonic pitches, twist a human's head in strange ways, and possess people. When it comes time for the ritual with Brenda, he makes the snowstorm abruptly end after trapping the families of Rohan and Josh.

He is able to divide his consciousness into multiple bodies because he simultaneously possesses Frank and the dog. He passes from one body to another by either eating the host's vomit or by chanting a Latin phrase. It's possible that he uses additional transference techniques. He needs at least one body, though, in order to survive, as demonstrated by his defeat.

He seems trapped in haunting that one building since Allie and Brenda called him to the distant house. His slaughter of Allie's family demonstrates his bloodlust. Towards the end of The Parenting, Brenda discloses that he has been tasked with finding a permanent body to possess.

The Cause of Josh and Rohan's Families Being Haunted by Ghosts

Shortly after Andras takes Josh's hand at the dinner table, Andras murders Allie, her brother, and her mother at the beginning of the film, and they all reappear frequently in horrifying ways. They are thought to be collaborating with the poltergeist after they pass away. But the real reason they're haunting Josh and Rohan's families is revealed at the end of The Parenting.

Throughout the entire film, the ghost family tries to alert the families about Andras in order to prevent their deaths. The precise reasoning behind their body contortions and grasping of the humans is somewhat enigmatic, given that they are mute after death. My best guess is that the ghosts were trying to frighten the families away. The actions are illogical otherwise.

The Reason Brenda Assists Andras in Parenting

The question of why Brenda is working with Andras in The Parenting naturally comes up after Rohan and Josh discover that she was aware of what would happen all along. There are two reasons for this. She probably had an emotional bond with the demonic poltergeist she assisted in calling forth because, in the backstory, she had a strong interest in the occult. She had suggested the summoning, after all.

Second, Brenda reveals that Andras allowed her to survive in order to achieve his objective of locating a permanent body. She claims that his voice is constantly playing in her mind, giving the impression that he is threatening her or pressuring her to comply with his wishes. This suggests that even if she didn't want to, she would still do as he said.

The Real Significance Of Parenting's Ending

Even though The Parenting is an enjoyable film, the plot is rather simple and lacks a deep significance. Nonetheless, the scene in which the family vanquishes Andras demonstrates that people are stronger when they set aside their differences in order to unite and defeat a common foe. The personalities, values, and self-expressions of Rohan's and Josh's families are very dissimilar. Even though they don't share much, their fear of Andras evokes compassion and love for one another. By doing this, The Parenting's families are able to vanquish the poltergeist that interrupted their trip.
