Lost but Not Broken

A Night in the Woods

Lost in the Woods

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in streaks of orange and pink. Jake and Emily, a young couple on a weekend getaway, had wandered too far into the woods while chasing the perfect sunset view. Now, as darkness swallowed the trees around them, reality struck—they were lost.

Emily tightened her grip on Jake’s hand. “Do you remember which way we came?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Jake took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. “I think… but everything looks the same now.” He pulled out his phone, but there was no signal. Their flashlight flickered weakly, its battery running low.

“We can’t panic,” Emily said, forcing a smile. “Let’s think.”

They decided to stay put for the night rather than risk wandering deeper into the unknown. They found a clearing, gathered some dry leaves, and built a small fire using a lighter from Jake’s backpack. The warmth and flickering light gave them a sense of safety.

“Do you think anyone’s looking for us?” Emily asked, pulling her jacket tighter around her.

“Probably. But we should help ourselves too,” Jake said, carving a large arrow in the dirt pointing toward the direction they believed led to the trail.

As the night stretched on, they talked—about life, dreams, and childhood memories—anything to keep fear at bay. The sounds of the forest—rustling leaves, distant hoots of an owl—felt less terrifying when they faced them together.

At dawn, they followed a stream they had spotted the night before, remembering that water often led to civilization. After hours of trekking, they stumbled upon an old wooden signpost. Relief washed over them as they recognized the trail that led back to their cabin.

As they emerged from the woods, hand in hand, exhausted but triumphant, Emily grinned. “Well, that was an adventure.”

Jake chuckled. “Yeah, and I’m never leaving the marked trail again.”

They had been lost, but together, they had found their way—both in the woods and in their unshakable trust in each other.
