The Queen and I

So here I was. Now I had a whole dysfunctional family, and they were vampires. Hermosa and Ivory were sharing the same bedroom. She wanted to share my room with me. Not hardly. I didn’t want to get that friendly. She seemed to be fascinated with the weather up here. I couldn’t understand it. It was becoming winter. The sun began to disappear more quickly and hover around the horizon as people prepared for all of the months of darkness.

Hermosa was a day walker, like Ivory and Terry, so that didn’t matter much to them, but a bunch of Night walkers who had been held up there somewhere would soon be coming out to what seemed like heaven to them. I did not look forward to that considering they would be hungry like bears coming out of hibernation. Yet again, my vampire friends and family repeatedly told me I had nothing to worry about. They had nothing to worry about. The sun was beginning to run around the horizon like a dim light around the rim of a bowl. It was getting dark and cold. I liked it, but it did get worrisome sometimes. Of course I worried.

I had gotten a lot more used to the temperature though. In all of my thick coats and so on, and even without wearing a hat sometimes, I could venture out into the cold air and enjoy the beauty of my surroundings. Even in the dark there were thousands of stars standing out, unlike in the more populated areas. A blanket of snow covered the ground most of the time. Mostly, we had space.

Everything wasn’t crowded. There wasn’t that much noise. You could see people when you wanted and most importantly, people minded their own business. Instead of being there all the time when you didn’t need them and being invisible when you did, it was the opposite here. That made for real community and a pleasant life.

Some evenings I would sit on the little porch I added to my cottage, which seemed to be growing every month with some add on or the other, and just look out over the bleakness. I was near the airport so I would see planes coming in every so often, but there were very few. I was living a good life…even with all these vampires around me. Old Hermosa was having a good time doing whatever Queens of Vampires did out there in the cold and on Terry’s boat with some of the other vamps.

I was satisfied. I sat back and relaxed, trying to keep warm the best I could, when Terry came walking toward me from out there, in the nearby woods.

“I expected you to be out there with Hermosa and Ivory tonight,” I said with a grin, pulling up a chair. He plopped down.

“Tonight they went somewhere without me, thank God. I got that boat so I could have some solitude. I don’t dislike their company, but I just like to go out there and relax by myself sometimes. I feel like I have to entertain them when they are there, if you know what I mean.”

“I know what you mean. I just let them be and try to pretend they aren’t there, but that doesn’t work very well.”

“You do have a Queen and her heir living with you. What do you expect? You’re lucky she doesn't have you shining her shoes or something.”

“A queen. Such bull-shit.”

“Way of the world, man. Way of the world.” He looked off into the horizon for a moment and then back at me. “So what are you doing?” I shrugged. “That’s what I thought. Don’t you do anything?”

“Sure. I read, I write, I sit and watch from my porch and exercise a little. What else is there?”

“What else is there? Winter is coming. You better find something to do. It gets pretty dead around here. Maybe you can go out on the boat with me…learn to sail. Hermosa and Ivory love sailing. They’ve been learning from me. They’re going to get their own boat. When you have unlimited funds like they do, they can get one with a snap of the fingers." He snapped his own. "And you are lucky enough to be part of that family. You’re a rich man.”

“I don’t need that much money. I have my royalties and some investments.”

“Plus what the vamps have funneled you.”

“You said the magic word. Have. I have it now so I don’t care.”

“Don’t talk like that. They’re very powerful. They can make your bank account sort of…be frozen, you know?”

“No. They wouldn’t do that.” He arched his eyebrow and grinned.

“Not as long as you are a good little boy.” We heard someone approaching and looked out across the field. It looked like Hermosa. She was alone at the moment, heading straight for us. I began to wonder if that foolishness about her being able to hear us from miles away was true. She climbed the steps to the porch and began to kick the snow off her shoes.

She looked at me. “Yes,” she said, and walked into the cabin. I looked at Terry.

“Told you.” He started to get up. “I better go,” he said.

“Why, you scared of the Queen?”

“No. I just want some solitude. I’m going to the boat. Come on down sometimes.”

“Why don’t you come in for a while and have something warm to drink before you make that trip?”

“Why, you afraid to be alone with the Queen?” he said laughingly. He gave me a wink. “See you soon.”

“Ok, and yes.”

“Good. Remember that. Don’t trust them too much.” He headed off that porch and began to tromp across the snow covered front yard, if you could even call it that. I went into the house. Hermosa was standing in front of the fireplace putting on logs. She was barely dressed for that weather. She looked nice, regular clothing for a home farther down south, but it was cold in there and it didn’t seem to bother her. I looked at her legs and body for a second and wondered who put her together. Jesus!

“Never seen a woman before have we?” she asked without even looking over her shoulder. I frowned and just sat down. She turned toward me.

“You’re blocking the heat,” I said. A smile forced through on her face.

“Well our little mate is growing some gonads is he?”

“Very rude.” I simply responded. She finished with the fire.

“That was the idea,” she said. She walked over and sat on the couch adjacent to my chair. She kept looking at me.

“Why are you glaring at me?” I finally asked.

“Maybe I’m hungry.”

“I’ll make you something.” She was silent.

“I haven’t bitten anyone in a while. I think I’ll bite you if you don’t mind.” I sat there for a few moments and then noticed that I couldn’t speak or move. She walked over and stood in front of me. “This won’t hurt a bit. You might even enjoy it.” I tried to cry out, but I couldn’t. She was near my throat when she backed off. “You make it no fun.” She threw herself back onto the sofa. “You and your little puppy eyes are so pathetic you even make me feel guilty.” I could move and speak suddenly, but I wasn’t going to say anything. She began to laugh. “Don’t you ever forget who and what I am. Do you understand?” I just nodded. “Good answer.”

“So after that showstopper what do you expect us to do, play pinochle? You really don’t know anything about people, do you?” I asked.

“As much as I need to.”

“That means no,” I said. “I’m just happy to be in your light, great Queen of the Night. Or is light the right word?”

“Still arrogant are we?” she said. “I like that. I have always liked you and your stories. I have been somewhat fascinated by you. That’s why I wanted you to be part of my family and father my child. That isn’t something frivolous. She is my first born. I never felt anyone was worthy before reading your stories and meeting you.”

“Really, that is nice to hear and kind of you to say.”

“Yes, it is. You belong to me. I told you I was your sponsor, right?”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t explain it enough. You belong to me. You are mine. You are my property. Did you see what happened a few minutes ago? I can do that to you anytime I want to and do whatever I want with you.”

“Can you really? And what do you have in mind?”

“Are you making a pass at me? I just told you something very scary and serious and you are making a pass. I can’t believe you.”

“I was just joking.”

“Sure you were. I saw the way you looked at me when I was putting the log on the fire.”

“That’s only because you have a pretty good body, I guess. And your face is just about passable.”

“We both know I am beautiful. More beautiful than you can dream of. What kind of game are you playing?”

“Nothing. Yes, something. Trying to see how far I can push you before you explode.” She smiled broadly.

“I can explode pretty fast.”

“I’d like to see it.”

“No you don’t.” She stood in front of me looking down at me menacingly. I was so embarrassed because she was so hot and it was such a turn on. “I don’t believe this,” she said. “You are…horny. You may be about to die and all you can think of is taking my body.”

“That’s not true,” I quickly said. “Do you want some tea?” She just slowly shook her head and sat back on the sofa and simply said, “Men.”

I couldn’t believe I had the hots for her. I had to find a girlfriend. She smiled as if hearing me. She probably did.

“You already have one of those,” she said, a smile playing upon her lips. “Later I’ll show you.” She crossed her legs, picked up a magazine from the rack next to the sofa and began to leaf through. I frowned. What was she talking about?
