The Creatures We Live Amongst

A Fictional Tale

By Abigail SpacePublished 5 years ago 9 min read

I've always wondered about the existence of magical creatures. Fairies, mermaids, unicorns, the basic shit. What I did NOT expect, is to find that we do live amongst fantasy creatures, just not the ones you'd expect. They call themselves The Vyxjids, and they are the most harmless beings ever, unless you cross their territory. And this is the story of how I did just that, and still, somehow (I truly don't know) managed to escape their power.

"Hey, what the hell is a Vyxjid?" Like I said, they're harmless unless you're trespassing. Seriously these things can be horrible. And I don't mean horrible in like they'll kill you type of way, because they don't want to see you dead. I mean they're horrible in the way that they have the power to create world chaos, just not in the way that you think. Anyway a Vyxjid is a 3 inch tall, pink flying creature that looks like a tiny fairy, but is actually a cross between a pixie and a hummingbird. I'm dead serious.

Side note- don't call them fairies, they'll bite the tips of your ears.

What a Vyxjid does is if you happen to cross their territory, they use their weird little elf powers to influence your memory to where you can only remember the times you have hurt people in your life, in any way. Now, typically when you hurt someone you love, you feel guilty about it. Now imagine having this guilty feeling 24/7 for all the horrible things you have done to people in your life, even if they weren't intentional? Exactly, you'd go insane.

I was in the forest when I met them. I had a fight with my girlfriend and needed to blow off some steam so I went for a walk in the woods. It wasn't my first time walking in these woods, I hiked here all the time. Everything was fine until I turned a corner and saw a fully grown willow tree in the middle of a clearing. Problem was, I've been hiking these woods my whole life and there has never been a clearing or a willow tree in that spot.

The scenery was straight out of a Disney movie. I mean the grass surrounding the tree was somehow greener than all the other grass, the moon shone directly onto the leaves and made them sparkle a little bit... It was magical. But it was hard to focus on Disney-like scenery when I couldn't even grasp how the whole thing got there in the first place. I'm not a complete moron, I knew some shady shit was probably going on. I was about to just walk away and act like I never even saw it when I heard a small male voice.

"Is that a human outside of the tree?"

"Open the leaves." An older female replied.

All the sudden the leaves on the tree parted and there they were- The Vyxjids. 300 pixie-birds that were pissed I accidentally came across their home.

All of them came flying at me. I tried to run but one of them pointed at my shoes and I couldn't move my feet. I thought they were gonna peck my eyes out or something but then they all just stopped, floating in a circle around my head.

"Who are you? Why are you trespassing in our home, which by the way we JUST BUILT!!" The woman who commanded the leaves to open screamed at me. I made the natural assumption that she was the queen or some shit.

"Who am I? What the F--- are you?? I've never seen this area in the woods before. I've DEFINITELY never seen you fairy-looking things before and-"

"I'm sorry, did she just call us 'Fairy-looking things' ?" One of them behind me said, sounding offended.

They all fell silent. Next thing I knew, I woke up on the ground with the tips of my ears burning.

"What the hell?"

The leader laughed and replied "Never, ever call us fairies. Next time we'll bite the tips of your ears completely off."

"You guys knocked me out and bit my ears because I called you a fairy?"

"Yep."

"Okay. Fine. Whatever. That's awesome. Now what are you guys?" I asked the Queen.

"We call ourselves the Vyxjids." She answered. She went on and recited this long speech about what the Vyxjids are and what they do, but I already explained all that so I don't need to repeat it.

After the speech I just kind of sat there. "So you drive people insane with guilt if they even accidentally set foot on your home?"

"Yes, we literally just explained it to you." I was beginning to hate this queen's attitude

"Okay. Cool. I don't really know what to think of this, so I kind of just want to leave."

"You think you're leaving? That's funny."

"Yeah but I don't really think a bunch of three-foot tall pixie-birds can really stop-" That's when they all dove towards my feet.

I was tackled to the ground by these little flying bitches. Four of them flew stayed up and chanted something I couldn't understand. Suddenly my legs felt numb and my arms felt like they were being pinned down.

"What are you doing, I don't understand why you have to punish people for things they did accidentally!? I won't tell anyone about your existence if that's what you're worried about!!"

The queen looked at me confused. "Human, what is your name?"

"Why should I do that?" There's no goddamn reason in the world they would need my name.

"Give me your name and I will let you walk out of here alive."

Couldn't argue with that. But luckily, they weren't mind readers, so I decided to give them a fake name.

"It's Vanessa." I finally replied.

The queen smirked. "Vanessa, because of your serious crime of trespassing, The Council of the Vyxjids"

"Council? What council? So far it's only been you making decisions!"

"Quiet! I am the council! Now for your crime we have no choice but to erase your memory and only leave you with your guilty conscience." The rest of the Vyxjids cheered.

"Wait a second, didn't you JUST say if I gave you my name I could leave?" I was like, 99% sure, sometimes my memory is crap.

"And you will. I never said I wouldn't do anything to your mind, just that you could leave alive."

Oh.

I tried getting up but their magic was too powerful. My arms and legs were basically glued to the ground.

The Queen started chanting, a louder, much slower chant than the last one. One by one the others slowly joined in, and a purple ray of light protruded from the Queen's hand. The light made it's way to the top of my forehead, and I closed my eyes.

Then I didn't feel different. After about ten seconds I thought I would've started crying over all my guilty thought, but I didn't feel anything. I opened my eyes and saw the purple ray bouncing off of my head, kind of like when two magnets repel each other. The Vyxjids looked stunned.

"This has never happened before!" "What's going on?" "Is she not actually human?" They all whispered among themselves, not knowing what to do.

The Queen yelled, "Be quiet and just keep trying!" But just as soon as she yelled that, the ray of light turned black and faded.

"WHAT? This can't be possible!" The queen made the light appear again and again and again but every time she aimed it towards me it did the same thing. After about 5 minutes of her trying and me getting bored of laying there, I said, "You know the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

"SHUT UP!" The Queen blasted a nearby tree and sank to the ground. The rest of the Vyxjids followed suit. What of bunch of kiss-ups.

They all didn't say anything, they just kind of looked at each other. I was still pinned to the ground so I eventually said, "Since that didn't work, can I go?"

"What should we do Madam President?" After the day that I've had, the fact this bitch, who was wearing a tiara as big as her and a ballroom gown, was actually their president didn't shock me.

"I'm not sure. We can't kill her, we aren't killers. We can't keep her here forever, she's annoying. I don't know what to do."

I knew what to do. "You could let me go. I'm really not going to tell anyone about you guys, promise." Sike. "I don't even want anyone to know I was in the woods."

The Queen, sorry, President, stared at me. "I guess there's no other option. But before I let you go. I want to know exactly what you were doing in the woods and what trail led you here so no human ever finds us again."

I had no problem showing them what I was doing here. I wasn't doing anything wrong, just calming from the fight with my girlfriend. "Okay, I'd say follow me but you guys have me pinned to the ground."

"Right, let her up." The feeling in my arms and legs returned. I got up from the ground and said, "Let's go."

I walked the trail back to where my girlfriend was while they all flew behind me, taking notes on what the trail looked like and how to hide it so no one could come by their home. We were almost to where I put her, but then I saw the blue and red flashing lights.

"Hide! They can't see me!" I whispered.

I ducked behind a tree a few feet away, praying the cops didn't see me.

"Isn't that the human police? They look so different than ours."

"You guys have- Actually I don't have time to care. Do you guys have a spell for invisibility or something, please?"

The President fell silent, then got a malicious look on her face. "Why exactly do you need to hide from the cops? Is that the reason why you're here?"

I sighed. I did tell them I would show them why I was here. "Fine. I had a fight with my girlfriend and I shot her. She died, and I needed a place to put her. I don't know how the cops found her here, but they somehow did and if they find me I am screwed!"

The President looked at me, then called one of the other Vyxjids over. They whispered for a little bit, which made me angry as hell (I was literally trying to hide from the cops for Christ's sake). Then the President asked me, "Do you feel bad that you killed your girlfriend?"

"No, she was being a bitch, but that's not really important here."

"This whole time you around us you didn't look worried or anything, you were just acting normal."

"Yeah because it was none of your business."

"That's it."

"What?"

"That's why our powers didn't work on you.

"I'm confused, what do you mean?"

"Seriously you haven't figured it out yet? You're a psychopath, according to my Humans Expert."

"What?" That was the weirdest thing she could've said. "No I'm not."

"Think about it," the presumed expert chimed in unnecessarily. "You don't feel guilty about killing your girlfriend, and you acted so normal we never would've guessed you had the capability of killing anyone. You probably act so normal in your regular life that no one you know would kill someone. That's the definition of a psychopath."

"Okay, well while you guys are figuring out if I'm a psycho or not, I'm gonna go further away from here."

"I actually have a better idea," the President said. Suddenly I was pinned to the ground again.

"What are you doing?! I thought you were going to help me!" I yelled, which was a bad idea.

"We were only going to help you since we ran ou lt of options. Now you have the chance to go to prison for killing your girlfriend, which to me, is good enough revenge for trespassing on our land! Now have fun, I'm sure we've caused enough commotion for the police to notice. Let's go everyone."

"You can't leave me here, please!" But the Vyxjids were already flying away.

The President was right. The cops heard me yelling and soon enough, I was in the back of the police van.

● ● ●

I was found guilty of the murder and sentenced to 20 years. During the trial I tried telling everyone about the Vyxjids, since they left me for the cops, but of course no one would believe me. Now here I am, at a stupid correctional facility in the middle of nowhere, writing this story. What's crazy is, the inmates here are divided about how they feel about the story. Some of them believe me, some of them think it was a stupid way to try and get out of prison, but most just think I'm bat-shit crazy.

But I assure you, those little sons of bitches are real. And I don't know how their powers didn't work on me, but I don't think it's because of the reason the President Vyxjid said. My girlfriend deserved what she got, just like all the others who pissed me off. Doesn't make me a psycho.
