There was only one rule: don’t open the door.
The Forbidden Door: A Whisper from the Dark
Anna repeated this to herself, heart pounding in her chest as she stared at the worn, wooden door at the end of the hallway. It wasn’t locked. It never was. The brass knob glistened in the dim light, almost inviting her to turn it. Everyone said it was for her own good.
She could hear the whispers now, growing louder, calling her name. Her hand hovered over the knob, trembling. What was behind the door? What could possibly be so terrible that no one, in all these years, had dared to look?
A creak sounded from the other side, soft but unmistakable. Anna stepped back, pulse quickening. She wanted to leave, but her feet felt glued to the floor. Curiosity gnawed at her, drowning out the warnings, the countless times she'd been told to stay away.
“Don’t open the door,” she whispered again, her voice faltering.
But what if… just one peek?
Her hand wrapped around the knob, cold and smooth beneath her palm. She turned it, slowly, the click of the latch reverberating in the still air. The door opened a crack, and for a moment, there was only silence.
Then, the whispers stopped.
A cold wind rushed out from the darkness beyond, chilling her to the bone. Anna’s breath hitched as she saw it—something that wasn’t human, waiting on the other side.
And now, it was too late to close the door.
