Marvel Studios has pushed the release date of Avengers: Doomsday to December 18, 2026. The film was originally scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. The Secret Wars movie has also been pushed back to December 17, 2027.

Doomsday and Secret Wars are two of the biggest movies Marvel Studios has ever made, according to one person. The Avengers movie is a huge undertaking, and the new date gives the team more time.

The change will help the Avengers movie production schedule. Avengers: Doomsday is currently in production and the December release date is one that Marvel Studios has been eyeing ever since Spider-Man: No Way Home was released this weekend.

As mentioned earlier, Marvel Studios has cut down on their lineup and put their projects on hold so they have room to grow.

Marvel surprised fans with its first announcement at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, announcing the return of Robert Downey Jr. - this time it's Doctor Doom.

Then, the studio announced that the Avengers was bringing him into a feature-length run on March 26th. You can see the full list here , though it looks like Marvel isn’t done yet (although, as TheWrap exclusively reported, Chris Evans is also coming back).

The Avengers franchise is currently the only franchise with three films to gross more than $2 billion worldwide before inflation, with 2019's Avengers: Endgame grossing more than $2.8 billion worldwide.

While it's unclear if "Doomsday" will reach that milestone, given that audiences have been treated to the MCU movies since "Endgame," its passage into the holidays will likely result in significant changes to other studios' release dates. Prior to this change, Disney had set Ice Age 6 for release on December 18, 2026, and that movie could be moved to next week.

Other movies slated for release on Dec. 18 include Warner Bros/Legendary’s Dune Messiah , Denis Villeneuve’s latest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic. Sony also has a new installment planned for the “Jumanji” series that was released a week earlier.

Movies that could stay include Universal/DreamWorks’ “Shrek 5” on Dec. 23 and Focus Features’ “Werwulf” on Christmas Day. While “Shrek 5” faces stiff competition, it’s worth noting that “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” earned $480.4 million worldwide in the winter of 2022 against competition from Disney’s “Avatar: The Waterfront” with a $2 billion audience, and “Srek 5” equals $2 billion season. millennia.

“Werwulf,” meanwhile, is the next film from “Nosferatu” director Robert Eggers, following a Christmas Day release that made it one of the highest-grossing films of all time, taking in $181 million worldwide. Unlike many other holiday releases, Werwulf is aimed at horror fans rather than four-person audiences and thus could still find its holiday legs in the shadow of Avengers: Doomsday .

But it’s not all doom and gloom, true believers. In recent weeks, we’ve seen Robert Downey Jr. A photo of BTS from Avengers Doomsday was shared on Instagram, marking his reappearance in the MCU as villain Victor Von Doom during the production of the Russos’ blockbuster movie. We also got confirmation that Sadie Sink and Liza Colón-Zayas from The Bear are set to star in Spider-Man: The New Day. Plus, we’re still digesting the ridiculous sequence leading up to Doomsday, which is still baffling. (Alan Cumming is Nightcrawler! Sir Ian McKellen’s Magneto! Channing Tatum’s Gambit! Sheesh!)

All of which is to say that while the delay doesn’t come with any exciting news to share, Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars remain, barring the adjective in Mad Titan, which is inevitable. And before that, we still have Ralph Ineson becoming a world-eating monster in Matt Shakman’s The Fantastic Four: A First Look. July roll!

Avengers: Doomsday , on the other hand, began filming in late April 2025, meaning the film will have a few days more than a year to shoot and complete post-production. Given that the cast of Avengers: Doomsday is significantly longer than that of Infinity War , such a timeline simply wouldn’t be possible. By giving the film an extra seven months to prep, Marvel Studios has ensured that Avengers: Doomsday will have ample time to produce. The extra year will similarly tie in with Avengers: Secret Wars . Starting with the last point, the delays for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will help Marvel streamline the studio’s post-production process. As I mentioned, a year to shoot and complete post-production on Avengers: Doomsday would be far too short, even if filming wraps in six months, as the studio is predicting. This would give the film's visual effects artists just six months to fully complete the necessary work, and given the CGI quality issues Marvel Studios has been struggling with since 2019, this wouldn't be feasible.
