5 Keys to Maintaining Productivity While Working From Home: The Reality and Challenges
Discover how to overcome the distractions of remote work and achieve the perfect balance between your professional and personal life.

When the pandemic forced us to work from home, many envisioned a paradise of comfort and flexibility. However, for those of us trying to balance work, family, and studies, the reality can be much more complex. Here, I share my personal experience and the strategies that have helped me stay productive despite constant challenges.

Before we dive into the keys, let me tell you a little about my life. I live in a small apartment in Colombia, located on a main road, which means the noise from ambulances, vehicles, and motorcycles is constant. As a remote sales advisor, I deal daily with domestic chaos: a little dog that barks at the worst moment, two energetic children (aged 7 and 9), and a routine that often seems impossible to manage.
Moreover, at the age of 46, I decided to continue my university studies in Social Communication. Yes, my life is full of responsibilities, but also valuable lessons that I want to share with you today.

The Unfiltered Truth: Working From Home Is Not for Everyone
Many remote work tips assume that we all have home offices, stable connections, and a quiet environment. The reality in countries like Colombia is different. We can’t always perfectly adapt our spaces, and I say this because apartments tend to be small, and internet connectivity with some service providers can be complicated. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to be productive.

Adapting to Chaos: How I Found a Routine That Works
1. Establish a Strict Routine:
Self-discipline is my best ally. Without a doubt, defining schedules for each activity allows me to maintain focus, even when noise or distractions surround me. Without self-discipline, my life would be chaotic in many aspects.
2. Create a Functional Workspace:
Although I don’t have a dedicated office, I have arranged a small corner in my apartment. It may not be perfect, but it helps me differentiate work from personal life. In that space, I placed a small plant to give it a more relaxing touch. There, I not only work but also study, which forces me to spend many hours in front of the computer.
3. Make the Most of Technology:
Digital tools are my salvation. From task organization apps to video call platforms, I have learned to optimize every available resource. I have also learned to use various applications; it hasn’t been easy, but I try, and I enjoy learning.
4. Count on Family Support:
My wife and close relatives are fundamental. Without their help, balancing my multiple responsibilities would be even more complicated. This is undoubtedly a great advantage because I know they are in a safe place while my wife and I work; she is not remote.
5. Don’t Be Too Hard on Myself:
There are days when nothing goes right, and that’s okay. I’ve learned to accept that progress, not perfection, is what really matters. Trust me; in sales, "not every day does the tiger hunt." Maintaining the right attitude and letting go of what couldn't be achieved or closed as a sale is key to not feeling discouraged or bad about it.
