Answering The Question Of Whether You Should?

The Guiding Principle That Helps Us Determine The Right Path

By Dr. Cody Dakota Wooten, DFM, DHM, DAS (hc)Published about 6 hours ago 3 min read

There are times in your life...

Where you have the ability to fight...

But the question is not whether you can...

It becomes whether you should?

Whether it is worth the effort?

Or the time?

Or whether it is really the direction that you want to keep heading?

This can be something really difficult to face...

Because we live in a world that tells us...

We can do anything we want.

It is not that we cannot do anything we want...

It is more of an issue of perhaps not always being able to do everything we want.

We all have limitations.

Time.

Resources.

Energy.

All of these are a part of the human condition.

You cannot avoid it.

At some point...

You will hit a limitation somewhere.

When you hit that point...

You have to bring up the question of whether it is really worth it.

I do not have the answer for you...

It is a question that is extremely dependent on your situation.

Sometimes the answer is no.

It is not worth it.

There is such a thing as costs that are too high...

And many people make the mistake of paying those costs to their regret.

Some costs only appear small up front...

Until you realize how some costs build up...

Or we fall into the sunk cost fallacy...

Or there are hidden costs that we never expected.

All of these and more do happen...

And they can become painful.

Even...

Horrifying.

So we must sometimes accept that there are costs that are not worth it...

And there are times where we should say...

It is not worth it.

But...

There are other times...

Where we should forge a path forward...

Where we should fight...

And some people live to regret not taking the chance.

They allow fear to hold them back...

Thinking that there will be another time...

Or place...

Then eventually...

They lose all the opportunities they had.

It is over.

Would it have been worth it if they had chosen to move forward?

Absolutely.

But they will never get to experience that opportunity.

Neither of these results is ideal...

It is not what we hope for...

Yet it is where so many people end up.

They ask the question of whether they should...

And they answer wrong.

So what should be our guiding principle when faced with this question?

Not to follow fear.

Fear...

Is the emotion that leads us astray.

People pursue the paths they shouldn't...

Because they fear what they might miss if they fail to move forward...

Even when they know deep down...

It is the wrong move.

People also fail to pursue the paths they should....

Because they fear what will happen if they get it wrong.

Fear...

Is one of our greatest enemies in life.

It can also be subtle...

We are very good at denying our fear...

And leaning into other emotions...

Excitement...

Bliss...

Guilt...

Pride...

But the reality is that underneath most of these...

We are feeling fear.

Do not allow yourself to be fooled by fear...

Root it out...

And understand why it is there.

Fear is not necessarily the problem itself...

It is not understanding the fear.

There are real reasons that fear should be felt...

But that does not mean that it should be followed.

That is the real trick...

Understand...

Without allowing it to control you.

This is often the way to navigate the question...

Of whether you should.

Good article, so much of our bad behavior is driven by fear. It might be an idea to add a real life example when you come back around to this.
