Quick Dirty and Wrong

How I started writing

Quick Dirty and Wrong

For a long time I have wanted to start writing, not to write a book but to see what it does to my thought’s. According to people smarter than me writing is a form of thinking. A lot of people talk about the benefits of writing to clear the mind and even inspire new ideas and bolster creativity. I tend to have a messy and unstructured mind so I am interested to see what regular writing does to change this.

I was recently watching one of Matt D'Avella videos where he talked about the concept of QDR, at least that’s what I think it was. The whole premise behind QDR is that in order to start writing tell yourself that it's going to be Quick Dirty and Wrong. For example I am writing with this method right now and it has allowed me to write around 130 words without worrying about how things read or grammatical errors. I'll need to confirm later the quick dirty and wrong are the right words, I am not so sure about the dirty. This reminds me about the 80/20 rule, 20 percent of actions are responsible for 80 percent of the output, I don’t need to know what the exact acronym is or what the entire principal is in order to benefit from it, instead, I know just enough to take advantage of it as you can see from the above.

While writing in this way might not be the best method or the most productive it does seem like one of the easiest ways to get started. As a beginner I often don’t know where to start or what to write about, this method allows me to just write. At first it did seem strange as I thought that in order to write you needed to know what you were writing about and how to write properly, I was wrong. A good example of this is another post I have written but not yet finished or posted, I sat there with a blank page not knowing what to write about, I started to write about what I have been doing, almost like a journal. A few sentences in I started to write about a book I have been reading called Meditations. Before I knew it, I was writing a book review of some sort. I never set out to write a book review, but I had a lot of fun doing it and it also helped me remember and ingest more of the information I had read. I plan on reviewing every book I read even if it's only for the sake of writing. As Don DeLillo has said ““Writing is a concentrated form of thinking. I don’t know what I think about certain subjects, even today, until I sit down and try to write about them.” I agree with this statement as I learnt more about what I thought of Meditations by writing about it, only after writing about Meditations did I realize how much I had learnt from it, only then did I discover what I truly thought of the book.

I'm not going to promote these writings or try to sell anything, my only intention is to see how it changes me, at the least it will allow me to become better at writing in general and this will help my work.

So, if anyone happens to join me along the way that’s cool, maybe we can learn something from each other, if not I am just as satisfied. My goal is to write one post per week. Topics will cover anything I am doing or thinking that week, it will be a mixed bag of confusion.

Thanks for reading.
