Being a Mermaid

A tale from the ocean's point of view

What does it mean to be a mermaid?

To have a fish tail instead of legs?

If I woke up one day

To discover I was half fish,

I would be elated.

Most people would think,

She’ll surely miss the land!

What I believe however,

That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Our planet is 70 percent water,

Our oceans vastly outnumber our continents,

The very land itself is shattered,

By rivers, creeks, ponds, lakes, and waterfalls.

The one downside to being a mermaid,

Is something man made

The toxins staining our rivers,

The litter clogging our seas,

The continent of trash tattooing our oceans,

All of it was mankind’s fault!

If mermaids had magical powers,

What I would want is very simple,

The ability to cure from humanity’s disease

Resetting our waters back to their former beauty.

What does it mean to be a mermaid?

To see the world from the oceans’ perspective?

I would love to discover the truth,

By being one with their kind.
