Carnival Games

Love Was The Token

My smile dissolved in your grasp

like fresh cotton candy in water

Ignoring red flags, as they gasped

a naive lamb being led to the slaughter

How did I let myself slip down so far

into the pull of your gravity

A transient shooting star

Decayed like a forgotten cavity

I ate up the sweets that you gave

offered freely without any strings

Until it was all that I craved

then, just like that, everything changed

The price for the things that I wanted

far more than I could ever afford

What I couldn't have, boldly flaunted

with another, when with me, you were bored

Today I am much more aware

of the bait and switch carnival games

Cautiously avoiding the snares

choosing carefully which ones I will play

surreal poetry

Life is like a carnival and full of chances that we all take.

  • This was so profound and poignant! Extremely relatable too! Loved your poem!

  • Once bitten, twice shy, well rid of such a guy.
