Destroying Angel
a poem in verse by Amy Black
It came for my family and me,
The sky darkened, and the wind blew,
I saw the destroying angel come,
and it grew, and grew, and grew.
It came for me,
my family fled; they were safe; that's all I knew,
I saw the destroying angel come,
and it blew and blew and blew.
It came so suddenly. It came so fast.
There wasn't time to abate.
The jarring reconciling of the past,
Forcing me to accept my fate.
It spun and snarled. It rumbled and flew,
I stood my ground to fight.
I tried to keep my family back
and protect them from this plight.
It took my breasts, my self-respect,
all I knew to be.
It broke my soul, my body too,
but not my family.
Then there they were,
by my side, pulling me from the storm.
I didn't have to fight alone,
This vortex hell had born.
It fled from my family and me.
The sky brightened, and the wind cooled.
I watched the destroying angel leave.
and the tears pooled and pooled and pooled.
