Monorhyme (For Kayla)

Kay liked to play in the woods

Under the dark of the tree boughs

In between the tall oak and pine trees.

Whooping and hollering with her friends

*

Chasing the fairies and fireflies,

Around and around the ponds

Wishing she could join them on the flight

To fly around the forest with her friends

*

Watching the fairies skim the water’s surface

Allowing the dragonflies to land on her head

Imagining their wings upon her body

Flying above the pond and playing Marco Polo

*

Checking each phosphorus glow

Looking for fairy treasure

Sharing her cookies with the fairies

Before she has to go.

Come near, sit a spell, and listen to tales of old as I sit and rock by my fire. I'll serve you some cocoa and cookies as I tell you of the time long gone by when your Greats-greats once lived.
