Growing Sideways

and I felt every mile between us.

By Rae JanneyPublished about a year ago 1 min read

Swallow my tongue and call me blind.

Forgive me, dear sister,

I'm lost!

You and I were meant to live for so much more

than poisoned mind

and blighted grain.

Yet one fed the other,

and now our dinner plates are

ornaments,

silently hanging over the cracks of our walls.

We were caught wandering the wasteland

of our screaming voices-

hearts like drums

and words like daggers.

Each one rippled across the spider's web.

Each one drew them closer.

The hairs on my neck prickle with fear.

With Wrath.

With Rage.

I begged you to take my hand,

Begged you to run!

But you were gone long before I even turned around.
