Guarding Water

Under this umbrella I sit

Constantly surveying the refreshing blue water before me

My eyes shielded by a polarized lens

My body teases my nose

Emanating the scent of perfectly blended coconut and papaya

Just as quickly as my mind escapes,

I snap it back like a rubber band

Focusing on the patrons frolicking about

Splashing around in their foolery

How I long to join them, if only for a second

Ready, at any given moment to jump in and bring them ashore

But know, I cannot save you if you try to save yourself, for if I do then death is certain.

No, only when you relax can I bring you to safety,

Although I yearn to float along the current, to cool off, I fight

I build up strength, stamina, and endurance

No words are necessary,

Just actions,

My job is not just a promise

It is like a security blanket, always at the ready.

The waves and current of the water will not overcome you

I am ready when you need it,

In this line of work failure is not an option

That is why, with polarized eyes

I sit under this umbrella, guarding water
