I Cannot Place You

your colors don’t match

By Andrea Corwin Published 2 months ago 1 min read

who are you out in the field,

walking and digging

with the Canadians?

I cannot place you

and I surely don’t want to insult you -

are you a mixed hybrid?

Could you be a Barnacle goose off the beaten path, having lost your way during migration?

I’ve never seen your kind.

Perhaps you are the offspring between a Canadian, mated with a Barnacle or snow goose? Do you know?

You weren’t alone in your different colors wandering the muddy fields. I wonder if the others are your siblings and if your parents are near.

Your mystery may be solved — but not today.

Loved this! We have a large field and have birds that we are not sure about too. Then there are the ones that stop in yearly. They don't get too close, but they are large enough to get a look! ❤️

Great poem, I would say, a wild goose and a domestic goose had mated together. This is definitely rare. Very engaging poem . I love your shared nature story. Its like I was there with you exploring them.

I am always delighted by any mention of "Canadians" in a poem!

This was a perfect tribute to the act of bird watching!
