Into The Depth of Darkness

Into The Depth of Darkness

time does not exist beyond the stars

and the light is brighter behind the veil

where is my soul when my mind is lost?

it's drowning in tears beyond the light of day

into the depths, I will search for you

below the darkness, I will find a way

a whisper of faith is all I want to hear

a gentle reminder there is nothing to fear

away sweet sound, do not tempt me

leave me to carve my broken path

into the depths of darkness, I will approach and fight

deep beyond the hopelessness is where I find the light

...

I have been on a unique journey of self-discovery for the last few years. I fell into darkness with a series of mental health missteps that led to alcohol abuse and a moral compass that lost its way in how I should treat people.

The irony of this is that my specialty as an astrophotographer is finding light in the darkness. However, over time, I lost the light and found comfort in the darkness of another kind, and it almost destroyed me.

I wrote this poem with the experience and run of open ended thoughts in my mind during that time. In a way, it's a way of healing and finding comfort in a new light.

The image I used for this poem is one I took one evening as I was capturing the moon. The reflections off the side are from the mirrors inside the telescope. A representation of an imperfect self trying to capture the perfect image of the moon.
