I went to the take out the trash
It’s just up the hill
I go up there everyday
I go up that hill and down most times in the daylight
This time it was at night
And I threw away the trash
But something about that streetlight
With its golden amber humming
Spoke to me.
I kept staring at it.
It told me how it stood there to guard the
Stars,
And I asked it why.
Turn around!, it said.
That moon!
The moon was there like an old lover
Waiting to say something important to me,
And I jumped.
Then, I really stared at her.
La Luna.
And I knew we knew one another.
She stared back.
Yea. She knew me alright. She knew my desperately lonely heart.
I knew her lonely heart, in the very core of her gravitational force, pulling me out and away—-yet closer than ever.
I heard a shuffle in the Dumpster.
I jumped again.
A squirrel jumped out, running away.
I walked back home,
Where I knew I could hear the
Longing and loneliness
Worse than ever.
