“Silence!” she barks across the classroom, “or you will lose your break time.” And so an

indignant sea of faces turn their attention back to their workbooks and continue with their

lesson. When it is quiet she returns to her desk to do some overdue marking.

Excellent work, Cam - a poignant and original interpretation of a challenging poem, she scrawls in green pen, pleased with his progress.

Nearby, outside the window, a crow lands on a bench and starts pecking at scraps left over from the break time scrabble. It

catches her attention, and she starts thinking back to her own schooldays - if only the pupils in front of her knew the mischief she’d got up to. An

even-tempered, subtle smile crosses her face and she looks up and secretly ponders her role now as the tyrant at the front.

I love the way the lines run together while maintaining the acrostic form

“The tyrant at the front” nearly killed me. I’m a college prof and have enormous respect for school teachers at all grade levels. I don’t know how they do it, but tyranny shouldn’t be it. Great acrostic, Beth!
