Speed Bump

On my first crush

By APublished 5 years ago 1 min read

I did not know I liked girls yet

when I fell in love with You.

I sat

on a yellow school bus

on the edge of revelation

You were not on the bus

but in my hand

nail polish chipping

as I clutched to the phone

waiting for you to respond

"Who are you texting"

my best friend asks.

I tell her it's You

She asks me

who

You

are.

"Oh" she'll say when I tell her

about group projects and popsicle and blue shoe laces and flower crowns.

"Oh," she'll say. "Her."

We hit a speed bump

and for a moment I am airborne

wondering how it's possible

for You to be nothing to her

and everything to me

because who

could forget

You?

I never come down from that speed bump.
