Starting Again.

The gift of begginning.

When I turned seventeen I thought I knew it all.

I danced, I laughed, I knew my truths,

I stood up firm and tall.

-

But when I reached nineteen, I learnt I didn’t know so much,

Wondering what life truly was,

Feeling frail to the touch.

-

At twenty-one I met her,

Her voice breaking time's cold stare.

“It’s time to start again” she breathed, and filled my lungs with air.

-

Now that I am older, I’ve walked beside her many times.

She’s stayed with me through every fall,

And all my nervous climbs.

-

As my life moves on, I let her in a little more.

See, starting again, she is my friend,

She’s opened every door.

-

Each door might not be pretty,

Each door may not be nice,

But looking back, I understand will open the same door twice.

-

I’ve found peace with starting over,

Found gratitude in her knowing.

Resisting her would hide the gifts she offers for my growing.

-

She’s taught me to be kind,

I’ve learnt her patience, not to run.

She’s walked me through the shadows so I could see the sun.

-

And when my world feels fragile,

In fear my story has met its end,

I trust she’ll lift my trembling hands,

“Come on…lets start again”

A gentle, honest piece full of quiet wisdom. Personifying ‘starting again’ as a companion makes growth feel tender and deeply hopeful.
