Stopping to smell the lilacs

On a drizzly evening stroll,

My chances are numbered

Before they have to go.

I catch the aroma on the light breeze drifting by

I inhale deeply as I close my eyes, head tilted toward the sky.

Stopping to smell the lilacs

Something I wait all year for

I better get my time in

Before they've faded to memory evermore.

I'll never get over the ephemeral nature of this act,

And come time it's over, I'll be longing ‘til they're back.
