The all heart derelict

Being responsible

He is a beggar,

Every day, sitting in the same place,

Many buses and vans pass him,

And the people as well,

Specially the children,

He receives edibles in most of the days,

But on some days, it is the other way around,

He doesn’t know the possibility,

But he enraptures his mind,

When he sees the chuckle,

Of the children pass him on the street,

Oh! How wonderful it is!

Smiles on the faces,

Are worth more than the food,

For him,

He helps out the little guys,

In crossing the road,

Sometimes to unwrap the chocolate,

He takes them as responsibilities,

But nobody had ordered them to him,

He does those things,

By heart,

This is the special day,

That a special wench meets him,

She is right near the pedestrian crossing,

With a fear of crossing the road,

The poor beggar stands up,

To perform the responsibility,

He gets the little hand,

By his dithering hand,

The little girl is laying eyes on,

The face of the poor beggar,

After kissing his arms,

By stretching up with her toes,

She noticed the chain,

On his neck,

That her grandma had told her,

Who is the only guardian of her life,

It is a silver color chain,

With a green color pendant,

Suddenly, she asks,

‘What is your surname?’

From the beggar,

‘Silva’,

The answer is the exact one,

That she intended,

‘I am your granddaughter’,

‘I am your granddaughter’,

She repeats it twice,

The poor beggar clasps her,

And he says,

‘My dear daughter,

I enjoyed life with little children,

Throughout my journey,

And this is just an enhancement of it,’

They go to their home,

To live with the grandma,

The beggar,

Now he is a grandpa,

But he never forgets his responsibilities.

I like how this is a feel-good piece Esala, and while it starts with the sad reality of what it is like to live homeless, you show how there are moments in his day where those human interactions come through, and then he eventually finds his long-lost family.

This tells a heartwarming story of a reconnection a grand-daughter and a grandfather. The theme of family, love and responsibility is embedded in this poem reminding me of the importance of connection and caring for each other.
