Email is scheduled,
it will go out tonight.
It shouldn’t be a surprise
but they’ll act like it is.
Unplug the mouse
put it in my bag.
I bought this for my last job
and I’m keeping it.
Sign out for the last time.
I’m getting butterflies now,
I’ve been dreaming of this day
for months.
Closing the laptop,
where’s that note I wrote?
Ah, there it is.
It slipped to the floor.
”All the instructions are
in the notebook in the drawer.
Deadlines, timing, expectations,
you’ll find it all there.”
Just a little tape,
this note will stay.
Powering down the phone
they assigned my first day.
The rest of my items are packed;
it’s not much.
No photos, no trinkets.
Work and personal are separate.
One last thing
pulling the badge from it’s holder
putting it into the company issue
lanyard. It’s a little more secure.
Badge, laptop, phone.
That’s it, time to walk.
I don’t know what’s next,
but I’ve had it with this.
I walk out the front door.
Get in my car, put on my seatbelt.
There are no tears, no sadness as I
start the car and drive away.
It’s over, I’m free.
