They'll Never Notice I'm Gone

Email is scheduled,

it will go out tonight.

It shouldn’t be a surprise

but they’ll act like it is.

Unplug the mouse

put it in my bag.

I bought this for my last job

and I’m keeping it.

Sign out for the last time.

I’m getting butterflies now,

I’ve been dreaming of this day

for months.

Closing the laptop,

where’s that note I wrote?

Ah, there it is.

It slipped to the floor.

”All the instructions are

in the notebook in the drawer.

Deadlines, timing, expectations,

you’ll find it all there.”

Just a little tape,

this note will stay.

Powering down the phone

they assigned my first day.

The rest of my items are packed;

it’s not much.

No photos, no trinkets.

Work and personal are separate.

One last thing

pulling the badge from it’s holder

putting it into the company issue

lanyard. It’s a little more secure.

Badge, laptop, phone.

That’s it, time to walk.

I don’t know what’s next,

but I’ve had it with this.

I walk out the front door.

Get in my car, put on my seatbelt.

There are no tears, no sadness as I

start the car and drive away.

It’s over, I’m free.
