The Things We Return

Today I return your hoodie, the red one soft as roses, you always stopped to admire

Today I return our photograph

The first one we ever took,

Clutching our love in a trembling frame

Today I return your book the one that leaves you in tears

Pages watered with emotions and fears

Today I return your teddy bear, the one light coco brown

The one that smelt like chocolate whenever I was around

Today I return your notes and the letters I never sent

Twisting and turning our story as if hoping it never ends

Today I return your promises the ones we couldn't keep

You promised you would love me and only me

Today I return the future we planned for days and days

I watch as the image turns ablaze

Today I return the version of myself

I shaped around you,

Because now I have to grow into someone new

Today I return all the memories we made along the way

Hoping you will hold them gently

So they never fade away

Today I return the love I held so tight

Hoping without me you can finally take flight
