I was warrior one - aching to

stretch limbs. You: Sunday rest - palms pressed:

breath of sky. I learnt to say

โ€œnamasteโ€ (but I) failed

your culture / love. Still,

I bowed to you.

When we broke,

I asked:

"why?".

Author's Note:

"Warrior 1" is a yoga pose.

"Namaste" is a South Asian term that literally means, "bow me youโ€ or โ€œI bow to you." However, in the western world - especially in the realm of yoga - it has been adopted and flung around to the point where it has lost a bit of its true native and cultural meaning.

(I tried to provide a link here to read more about the word Namaste, but my "embed" feature is not working for some reason.)

We should always be mindful when using words, terms, and phrases from other cultures and to treat them with respect.

My idea for using Namaste in this poem was to provide a metaphor for how someone can take bits and pieces from someone's love (maybe for their own gain) and not understand, respect, or want to learn that love fully.

This person was in the "Warrior One" position for their partner but was really a Warrior of One.

Very cool concept, Gina! And so cleverly executed! Well done!

  • Oh wow, I never knew Warrior One is a yoga pose or the real meaning of Namaste. I'm soooo glad you provided these context because now your Nonet packs a bigger punch with that knowledge!
